Here are two things I could never picture myself doing at the age of 17:

1) Getting excited when applying to jobs that offer a 401(k) plan with company match up.

2) Getting officially summoned for jury duty. Has anyone here ever done jury duty before?

Oh, the excitement of aging ..

Ah, you are ahead of me on the 401(k) front--never had a job that does that.

Which court have you been summed to? I was summoned once, but I don't remember which court it was. I know the courthouse was large and within walking distance of Pioneer Square so people on jury duty got discounts at Elliot Bay Book Co. I didn't actually have to serve, but I was called in for a jury selection, and would have been next up if they hadn't already filled the jury and alternates.

Well, technically I don't have a job that does that either, but if I'm lucky, I'll start interviewing (and get) jobs that do that!

I've been summoned to the Seattle Courthouse on Stewart St. - it's downtown near Westlake and Pacific Place, I think. So, I'm thinking it's not the same one you went to ... that's neat that they gave you discounts at Elliot Bay Book Co. though! Is the court normally that generous to jurors?

I'm a little wary of how long a trial could potentially go on for, but I'm thinking what will happen is that they'll call me in for questioning on the first day and eventually send me home for whatever reason(s) they have. That seems to be pretty commonplace with many of the people I've spoken to so far about jury duty.

I hadn't thought of it that way, but I'd be interested in comparing me at 17 to me now.

Regarding jury duty, I have been lucky enough to avoid it up till now, but a lot of my friends have been through it. Good luck!

It's funny because I actually remember thinking that jury duty was for truly old people at some point in my teens .. haha, how lame was I?

I know a few people who have been called in on the first day of trial, been questioned, and then released at the end of the day for not meeting the standards for whatever particular case was at hand. So, I'm thinking that may possibly happen to me as well? We'll see. (I don't actually have to go into court until Nov. 13)

All of my friends weren't chosen because they were college students at the time, but I think that they'd probably think we don't have enough life experience yet to qualify for the jury (I'd hope!), so ... I hope that's what happens in your case!

Oh, and YAYY for NaNo! It's always really difficult to come up with a plot or story idea that you think will keep you motivated and last all the way to 50,000 words haha. Good luck and we can yay for being first-time NaNo buddies!

I had to go in for jury duty in July. I was sent to a trial, questioned for hours, and at the very end of the day they asked me to leave! I was lucky, because that trial was expected to go on for weeks...

Yeah, that seems to be a common experience for everyone I've talked to who has even come close to doing jury duty! I don't seem to know anyone who has actually sat in a trial. What kind of questions did they ask you? (are you even allowed to say? hehe)

Hmm, let's see... They asked my age, where I've lived in the past 10 years, about if I have a spouse/kids, what jobs I've held in the past 10 years, hobbies, about my college degree/what I studied in my field... stuff like that. They'd also ask questions like if you are related to anyone that works in law enforcement and if that would affect your view of things. Later they asked me specifically for clarification about my degree and studies. Shortly after that they dismissed me! They must not have liked that I was a Sociology major and focused my studies on criminology and the justice system!
