I am going to go ahead and be greedy here, and hope that someday he is remembered for what he does as president, and not for being black. No doubt being the first of something is great, but it makes me sad that we are still marking things like The First __________ to do _________ where the first blank is filled with a skin color or a gender or whatever.

Oh, absolutely. But until we get past "the first," we can't get to the rest. :) Social change is happening at an amazing rate, and I'm glad we're impatient ... it means we get to speed it along. But we should also realize that we're paving new ground here, and it's going to be rocky.

Still, the sweetness of victory is tainted by the bitterness of California apparently passing the gay marriage ban. :-/

True, but I've hope that the future is progressing. If we stop to think about the Civil Rights movement and how long it took to get to where we are today, it gives us hope that the country is changing for the better and that full gay rights and equality is inevitable. These are the death knells of the old guard, so keep faith that we're moving in the right direction.
