Odds and Ends

We must go play paintball. It's a gateway sport to a criminal world of adrenaline junkies and war games. I believe jakethrash is organizing something, but feel free to post here if you're interested.

This weekend was wonderful. I did very little. Friday night was happy hour at ammitnox's place; Saturday was barbzirra's birthday party (good times!). And the rest of the time ( Read more... )

Yeah, the name for National Sorry Day day is rather lame, and "sorry" doesn't carry the gravitas of "apology".

OTOH, the US has yet to apologize for what happened with Reservations, Indian Boarding schools, and endlessly broken treaties. As lame as the name is, we could use a "sorry" day of our own.

I agree about Fringe. Walter has always been my favorite part of the show.

Unfortunately, I've tried to get aijoskobi into Fringe, but she says it's essentially just an X-files ripoff. Even after she was in the room during the two OMG moments in the season finale, she just rolled her eyes, said it was nothing new, and that J. J. Abrams just recycles other people's ideas and never does anything original (and this coming from someone who was OBSESSED with LOST during the first 2 seasons).

Frankly, I'm at a loss on how to win her over.

Well, that's the thing. I totally think that there are elements of it that are a rip-off, but if that's all you concentrate on, you miss what it's really about. It's the psychological study of Dr. Bishop. I mean, just think ... much of what they investigate is either his, his and a colleague's joint work, a close colleague's individual work, or work based on any one of the above. There are huge memory gaps and large swathes of insanity with Dr. Bishop. What if he's not that much different than William Bell after all? Conversely, what if it's the epic story of Mad Scientist vs. Mad Scientist? Or, better yet, the story of redemption of a Mad Scientist? THIS is what's new and interesting, and everything else is just trappings and tropes to carry it to a mass marketable audience ( ... )

Well, she claims she watched the first 4 episodes or so, but I really think it was more like the first 2.

And since she's already made up her mind about it and seen the last five minutes of the season finale, I doubt I could sway her in the other direction even if I tied her to the couch and made her watch the first 8 episodes.

If you have to work hard to enjoy the show is it really worth it?
I don't remember ever having to put effort into watching M*A*S*H or X-Files or Buffy or Simpsons or Coupling or Firefly or Farscape or...well, you get the point.

I _could_ learn to like Fringe. But I could also learn to like bourbon or sushi. And frankly, there's much better things that I already like. (Scotch! Tequila! Steak! Pizza!)

Paintball is tons of fun. If you haven't played before, be prepared to get bruised. Getting shot in the knuckles sucks. Bring anti-fog spray for your mask. Oh, and shoot them first.

In a word? Yes. If I put in effort and get a great show in return? In two words? Hell yes. :)

Meh. I already don't have enough time for great stuff that I don't have to work at. Leaving time and willpower points free for things I _want_ to be great at like fighting, sewing, leatherworking, gaming, husbanding and parenting. Or allegedly parenting. Or parenting alleged children. In no particular order.
