Seriously!? I have to hear this Atlas Shrugged bullshit again? I thought once it was parodied in a video game we would be done with it. Never has a self-aggrandizing rape fantasy self-justified so much to so many ( Read more... )

Aside from the obvious need to point this out whenever possible, is this a reference to something in particular?

Colbert did a piece with like 10 different political/financial pundits touting Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged as being everything from prophetic to the ideal of America.

I was so filled with rage at it that I could barely keep from running out into the street and killing a passerby to punish the human race as a whole or possibly as a-hole.

Ayn Rand's philosophy only works with large mute killing machines in diving suits. Without that, the whole thing falls apart ideologically.

I dunno forcing people to help the poor, seems about as ethically correct as being a parasitic welfare leech, and being a corporate yuppy douchebag who porfits from other's hard work.

I suspect we differ on the basis of our ethics. Ethics is not a written in stone litany of dos and don'ts its basicly an offshoot of philosophy. Modern interpretations of ethics almost always include the obligation of helping someone in need as long you do not jeopardizing yourself. If you accept that then your statement is not correct my premise is entirely ethical. Especially since in your argument you separate out the legitimate poor from welfare leeches. Your point must then be that you think its unethical to be forced to help those who are disadvantaged and not scamming or leeching. The only way I can see it being unethical is if you define ethical as never being forced to do something you don't want to even if it protects others or benefits society as a whole. That would mean drunk driving is ethical because I want to and probably no one will get hurt. Not my preferred definition. I suspect you are try desperately to shoe horn ethics into a shape that fits your predetermined belief or Dogma ( ... )

You have to limit the help to those that are willing to help themselves or are at least trying to and failing to do so. Welfare, disability, and unemployment help very few people who actually need it because 90% of the money goes to those who milk it for all it's worth. I was damn near homeless and destitute and thanks to friends and family VOLUNTARILY helping me, I got back on my feet. i never used a dime of welfare or unemployment ( ... )

Then we are partially in agreement at least. Your argument seems to center around not wanting to be tricked into helping people who are just looking for a free ride. That's a different argument entirely than what you said before ( ... )
