Moving to dreamwidth or staying on lj?

Dec 25, 2011 20:14

(Please note that with some time of waiting in the dreamwidth queue the entire community including all comments and settings can be moved to dreamwidth.)

Poll Move to dreamwidth or stay on lj?I'd also like to say, for those who don't know yet that dreamwidth is going invite code free til the end of the year. However, you can also post without having an account here ( Read more... )

I say move to DW. I fortunately have not suffered any migraines from LJ's new comment system (unlike many other users) but I have gotten the occasional headache from it. Since LJ already has plans to completely revamp the site, I'm worried that one day LJ is going to be completely unusable for a lot of people.

i don't mind to adjust with dreamwidth (i have no knowledge about it though)

it's kinda difficult with recent condition to track tnb anon posts, please do what you think is the best, we trust you mods! (okay bunny-trust-syndrome here... lol)

Things Dreamwidth has in its favor aside from subject lines and non-painful comments pages:

Larger character limits on comments. Over here we're limited to 4300 characters per comment. Over there, 16000. So a fic that needs to be posted as three or four comments here? Only one over there. Much less hassle for people who are filling.

Each comment has a link to view the entire thread starting at the original top-level comment. This means if you get an email notification for say part 50 of a fic (not that very many fics would get that high with the larger comments!), you can go to that comment - and then click to view the whole thing starting from the prompt that inspired it.

Comments pages have a link to view=flat. This is a feature not a lot of people seem to know about at LJ, because you have to add it to the URL manually - it gives a chronological list of comments to any post, rather than threaded. This means if you want to see what fills have been posted/updated recently, you can click that link and go to the last page, and see ( ... )

DW is designed so that fics can be directly loaded onto kindle and other e-readers, so you can post a multichapter fic in a single entry. I'm not sure how many characters they do allow for a single entry, but one entry I posted was 30,000 words.

Character limit on posts is 160,000 characters - I looked it up earlier because I'd never hit it. (Of course, anything above about 50,000 words, I tend to divide it into chapters just so people can take a break. ;)) Comments on the most recent news post suggest it equates to around 50,000-60,000 words per entry.

Which is great for de-anoning, admittedly, but the increased comment limits are especially useful for the meme itself.

There's a way to reenable subject lines - the mods on f-fa essentially recreated the previous layout, and in their version, subject lines are featured again: http://fail-fandomanon.livejournal.com/25451.html

If you try that, the meme should regain previous functionality.

I saw that method floating around on plurk...

IMO though, LJ's handling of the subject-lines/comment layout change has left a bad taste in my mouth. Their message has been pretty much 'Deal with it'. What else will we be forced to 'deal with' later on?

Limits on comment/entry texts so it'll be more like Facebook? And all with nothing but a warning a week before it suddenly happens?

I'm simply concerned that a move to DW will kill the meme. Activity has gone down since the series ended anyway, and bigger comms have been slain by a LJ->DW move. A couple of years ago, without tumblr, I would've supported a move wholeheartedly, but now when fandom is already fractured as fuck, you shouldn't take a gamble like this.

Well, I get the whole meme in my inbox and I've only really noticed a huge drop in activity since it became apparent just how much lj has fucked up and how they're not going to give an inch on the whole issue. I also don't think tumblr is a big threat to kink memes by their limited comment space alone. Sure, you could post fic, but there's little room to respond and their tagging system seems laid out too universally ( ... )

Why don't you simply wait for a while? It's obvious they are going to make the necessaries changes after all the feedback they are getting about this new system (unless they are retards).

LJ doesn't always roll back changes after people complain about things. There have been times in the past where they have, true enough, but considering the shift in the dev team and the particularly dense nature of LJ's customer service, I really don't see this one being reversed. The changes have already been coded, and there are so many more that they've already paid people do. It's highly unlikely that they'll simply throw it away.

Where is that obvious? Up to now every single thing I've read from the lj team makes it sound that they are not going to budge on this. In fact, someone higher up called it "non-negotiable". No matter how much the staff directly in contact with us maybe really listen, the ones up there don't care.

The results so far are roughly 2:1 in favor of moving, with 61 votes having been cast in the past day or so, which is a pretty fast response, considering you posted it on Christmas. I know your post has an end date already announced, but how many votes should we wait on before deciding? (I have no idea how many people frequent this meme, but it can't be more than 100, can it?) Just asking because moving during DW's grace period would be a lot easier on everyone, if we're going to. This is totally 100% your decision, though.

Also, if we do end up waiting until later and then DW goes back to the regular invite-only system, could we have a post somewhere on the meme for us to exchange invites so that everyone can make it over there okay? Just a suggestion, but I think it'd be really nice.
