Moving to dreamwidth or staying on lj?

Dec 25, 2011 20:14

(Please note that with some time of waiting in the dreamwidth queue the entire community including all comments and settings can be moved to dreamwidth.)

Poll Move to dreamwidth or stay on lj?I'd also like to say, for those who don't know yet that dreamwidth is going invite code free til the end of the year. However, you can also post without having an account here ( Read more... )

I vote that we move and do it as soon as possible. Dreamwidth is allowing people to sign up for free accounts without an invite code until the end of the year. If we wait until the middle of January, we might not have that opportunity anymore. The invite code system is what appears to be deterring people the most from moving. That, and fear that no one else will move with them. If we could all agree to get out of here now, neither of those would be an issue.

I've already imported my personal LJ, and it was really easy to do. For those of you still worried about losing contact with your LJ-only friends, DW has a feature that allows you to automatically crosspost your content to LJ. Besides, as it has been pointed out before, you don't need an account to post anonymously. Are people really that lazy that can't simply update their bookmarks? And the DW post/comment format is essentially the same as what LJ was before the change, so it's not like there's gonna be a bunch of confusing new doodads to adjust to. It'll be the same ( ... )

You do have a point there. Though I think the whole thing for moving comms isn't going to be set up til tomorrow or so? Or so I've heard. I've imported my rp journal and my personal one will soon follow.

I just didn't want to suddenly jump this whole thing on everyone because I was like yeah, it's Christmas, a lot of people probably won't be online. But reading opinions now, and following what I'm seeing all over lj, I might soon have to revise my post. :/

Oh, no, that's completely understandable, and I'm glad that you're considerate of everyone's feelings and opinions about it. I trust you to make the right choice for the community.

I just read through the update post over there, and what we're looking at is might take longer to do than we thought, but it shouldn't be too much of an issue. They're experiencing an importing queue overload thanks to LJ's sudden douchey update, so they'll be putting a (temporary) restriction on community imports to paid accounts only until they can get their queue a little more caught up, and there will be a (temporary) restriction on importing comments (but not entries) from communities with over 100,000 comments, but I don't think we're quite that massive yet, so that shouldn't be a problem. Keyword in all this is temporary. So, it might take a little bit longer than we'd hoped, but it's still doable within a reasonable amount of time.

Have you looked at the new-layout method that was linked to in one of the above comments? I really don't want to move to Dreamwidth; as others have said, there's a chance of it significantly reducing the number of users here, and LJ-only folks who come into the fandom after the move won't be inclined to visit. Changing the layout would fix almost all our problems, if that's a feasible option. As for if the new changes get added to S2...well, we'll deal with that if it happens. But I really think a move to DW would put a major damper on acquiring new posters.

I heard that layout still doesn't help with long threads...

But it's better than nothing, right? I wish there could be a solution that fixes everything, but neither a layout change nor a move to Dreamwidth will do that. Ultimately, it's up to the mod.

Better than nothing, but it's only a temporary fix. And we're just being forced to run through hoops right now...

This change LJ is forcing us to do (and will likely keep on forcing us to do if their business practice thus far is any indication) is no better than the adapting we need to do to get a hang of dreamwidth.

And besides, we can go for a partial move rather than a full one since t-and-b-anon still requires us to post anon on the main meme pages (and therefore, users don't need to have an account there. I hear they also have a flat view of the pages so you can see what new comments have been made to the page). Put all the prompt/fill links on dreamwidth, provide a link here, and maybe keep the update page here.

Another perk would be the larger text limits over at dreamwidth.

Move please. LJ clearly doesn't give a fuck about the fandom side and wants to become a new facebook.

For those who are uncomfortable with moving, here's a few links to read up on.

A preview of what LJ will look like in the next year or so. They aren't going to change it back.

How nasty LJ's staff has been to the userbase

How to make Dreamwidth appear to look like LJ

How to get some of your pretty layouts on Dreamwidth

In addition, Dreamwidth suffers no DDoS attacks and has an active staff willing to help out and answer questions as quickly as possible

Oh yes and http://dw-codesharing.dreamwidth.org/

Getting a DW journal, even after the promotion ends is really easy. If you guys still need invite codes, message me I've got plenty to share

^ this.

Personally, this whole fiasco has just proved that the Russian-side of LJ doesn't care about its English userbase (let alone its Russian userbase...)

Ah, my only question is what to do about the long fills that are already in progress. If we move, will there be a post specifically for continuing those? If so, will we have to repost them entirely, or just have a link to what's already written and go from there? And if not, do we just continue working on them on LJ, or do we integrate them into the new prompt requests on DW somehow?

The comments to every post can be imported as-is, so that no one has to repost anything or link to other threads or start up fresh with new posts or any of that other confusing BS. If we move, every post, comment, and thread in the community will come with it. You won't have to do anything except wait for it all to transfer to DW.

I'm an author of an in-progress fill, and honestly I'm unlikely to continue my fill on the meme unless I know for sure we're going to DW. Because trying to post it here (not to mention other people trying to read it here) is so, so incredibly annoying now. Thinking I'm going to keep on writing until either it's finished and I can post it to an actual fic archive, or until I know we're going to DW and people will actually be able to see it shortly, and eventually I'll be able to post it through a system that doesn't make me want to claw my eyes out.

I dunno if other author!anons are in the same boat, but this whole mess does not exactly make me want to post fills. :/
