Moving to dreamwidth or staying on lj?

Dec 25, 2011 20:14

(Please note that with some time of waiting in the dreamwidth queue the entire community including all comments and settings can be moved to dreamwidth.)

Poll Move to dreamwidth or stay on lj?I'd also like to say, for those who don't know yet that dreamwidth is going invite code free til the end of the year. However, you can also post without having an account here ( Read more... )

Some of us might end up just posting to the dreamwidth side, though :/

What would be so bad about that? If we have two memes and the majority decide to only use one of them, then the best system won, right?

I'm of the mind that I'd rather the comm choose one side alone to post the prompts/fills. If it's Livejournal, it's Livejournal, if it's Dreamwidth, it's Dreamwidth. That's why we're even having this poll anyway. And that is exactly why some people are against moving Dreamwidth in the first place: Because they're worried about fracturing the fanbase.

I mean, I know dev_chieftain wanted a sort of 'archive' for the comm, but I think that, even with warnings, some people will still prefer to post on the dw side (while some will just post to the LJ side)... It's just messy, I think. I mean, I get that you want to pit the two systems against each other, but I think the reader loses that way.

I voted to move because LJ's customer support has been astoundingly poor, and for every time they implement changes that people hate and people don't leave, LJ will feel more and more free to ignore customer feedback. In particular the fact that accessibility is a second priority is very frustrating.

Not sure how closely related this comm is to the main tiger and bunny comm (I know you link to it in the User Info at least), but has anyone talked to the mods there to see if they've any interest in moving the main community to dreamwidth as well? It seems like there might be less fracturing of the fanbase if both of the major communities are on the same site.

I've asked them about it, their response was "We'll keep it in mind".

Well, I as mod don't really have any contact with the mods of the main comm. I was wondering if they'd be making a move though. But yeah, they seem to be contemplating it, but probably not quite sure yet, like so many,

There is an existing T&B comm on DW, but it's pretty dead. An influx would change that, probably, but an import of the existing LJ comm might work better.

I've been watching the poll since it's been put up, and as new votes have trickled in over the past three days, the percentage of people wanting to move has remained exactly the same, and it doesn't seem likely that the percentage will change. A significant number of author anons complained about how much they hate the new comment system (thread four comments up), and some even said that they won't post the remainder of their ongoing fills to the meme unless we move. That's pretty bad, folks. Without someone filling the prompts, this meme has a 100% chance of dying. A two-thirds majority is pretty significant, and even if the 35 people who voted to stay absolutely refuse to participate after we move, there would still be 70 happy people keeping the meme alive. There's also probably a few people who won't care either way that aren't voting at all.

Um... is this good enough for us to announce that we're leaving? At this point, we're probably better off trying to convince the people against moving to follow us over there.

It looks like the LJ-only users are coming out of the woodwork now. D:

I really hope the vote goes DW. I have three ongoing fills right now, and I want to actually be able to finish them.

Agreed. I feel like a jerk who's being inflexible, but I really don't get the appeal of remaining on LJ at all. :(

Yeah, I was the anon who first commented above about not really feeling like posting more updates to fills unless we moved, and I was afraid of coming off like "I'm taking my ball and going home unless I get my way!" ... but navigating the meme with LJ like this is impossible, and only going to be more impossible when they do as they stated they were going to do and remove subject lines from S2 styles too. (Since they've said nothing at all on the matter of subject lines despite the outcry, it's pretty obvious they're not changing their mind.)

Anon author here to ask: Are there any authors who would continue filling if we do NOT move? I was one of the ones who spoke up above basically saying I pretty much definitely will not be able to with this system, but I want to know if there would still be authors posting if we remain here.

I'm also curious what exactly people would plan to do with this system if we stayed. Are there some ideas on how to make things more navigable again?

I'd probably eventually complete my fills, but I'd be more likely to post them non-anon and just comment over here letting the OPs know where the finished fic was, rather than posting my updates as I write them. I've posted two fill updates since the change and it's just not worth the hassle.

Heads up - community imports are up and running over at DW! For comms with less than 100,000 comments, anyway... and we've got a little under 19,000.

Yeah. And as far as I understood that paid accounts have priority for another two weeks. I did ask and hopefully will get a response. But I think having misunderstood that is wishful thinking. :/

If we make the decision to move, I'd be only too happy to donate you some paid time, if I knew your DW ID. Maybe just for a month, but it'd easily be worth $3 to me to get the comm moved over there.

Could always temporarily change password, grant maintainer access to someone with a paid/etc. account, let them take care of it, then have them give maintainer status back, and change the password back.

I'd offer, since I have a seed account, but you don't know me, and probably do know SOMEONE with a paid account. ;)
