Top 100 Songs of 2014

Time for my commentary on the Top 100 Songs of 2014!

Important note: This is not my own personal ranking of songs, but taken from a pop radio station's official list based on airplay and requests or whatever. (I used iHeartRadio ranking this year, which Jessica and I actually did listen to the last 8 songs of during our drive on New Year's Day). I ( Read more... )

So now that I am no longer working in retail that pipes in ~adult contemporary~ 8 hours a day, I've gone from "oh yeah I heard that" on like half the of the songs to "WHAT ARE THESE" on all of the ones that aren't from 2013 or weren't turned into a Weird Al parody. Back into my music cocoon!!

Yeah, my exposure to pop music ebbs and flows; the years I was in Japan most of the songs I was just like "What?" (but 2009-2011 were pretty boring and repetitive in terms of music anyway, ultimately). At this point I seem to be the most knowledgeable/attentive of most people I know when it comes to Top 40 music, probably thanks to driving a car that can only play radio. (And knowing I will make this list at the end of the year, lol). It seems most people have switched to listening to their own ipods or whatever.

Weird Al's album this year was awesome.

I tend to hardly get any exposure to the charts during the year so I always listen to a few of these lists at the end of the year. A few pop ones and then maybe Rolling Stone or something "cool".

I agree about the Meaghan Trainor song. It verges on body-shaming and that's something I'm very uncomfortable with. But she says "I'm only playing" so that makes it okay?

I found Lorde hugely bland with her sing-songy, nursery-rhyme simple songs, until I heard the Mockingjay soundtrack one, which I love.

Chandelier is my song of the year. I only have the range for it sometimes, but it's a fun sometimes! I'll have to check out the video. I don't think I ever deliberately twirled around my living room but I still do sometimes, sometimes I'm standing and dancing involuntarily before I really realise it's happening!

Yeah, and even the "just playing!" kind of bothers me since that's honestly kind of a bullying move to say something provocative but then say you were "just joking!" and implying it's the other person's fault for being offended.

Ha, I didn't put much thought into how simplistic Lorde's songs are, but you're right XD I think when Royals came out the fact it was so minimalist and simple compared to most of the overprocessed EDM on the radio with it made it feel really refreshing at the time. I do like most of her stuff overall, though. Yellow Flicker Beat is particularly good ( ... )

Oh, and as for Ed Sheeran, my Mum and I have a running joke about how dull he is, with his sad songs. We were delighted he cheered up for Sing. Looks like all it takes to cheer him up is team him with Pharrell and make him a puppet of himself. Come to think of it, that would cheer me up too...

It's true, Ed Sheeran is quite the downer as well. Heaven forbid he and Sam Smith team up, we'll all end up depressed >.< I don't see how anyone could be unhappy being made into a puppet, though! (Except maybe Oscar the Grouch?).

Yeah, I have always been fond of him thanks to Bailamos being my jam when I was 10, lol.
