Something weird happened yesterday. I was re-reading and revising the novel so far (working title: Winter's End) off the icloud version when I discovered that Chapter III had been text clipped out of existence. In my experience, Word (assuming that is what you use) can be rather picky about integrating with cloud services too. It is possible that you have a Time Machine copy of an earlier version of the file that you could have reverted to or picked up the lost text from, but it's probably best to get someone to help you in person rather than giving advice over the internet.
If nothing else your friendly local Apple store (again assuming macOS) should be able to help you set up a reasonably cheap and simple to use backup plan against data loss and show you how to recover stuff from there.

It's scary how quickly your work can disappear on a computer though. I had just completed a major English composition paper back in the 90's and decided that I'd wait and print it out in the morning because I was tired and liable to make mistakes. Woke up the next morning and the computer wouldn't turn on! Luckily the professor gave me a three day extension and I was able to recreate my paper in that length of time. (Best of all, I still made my A for the class!)
I now have an external hard drive for keeping such valuable things.
I am looking forward to your next book!
