Strange Days

Something weird happened yesterday.  I was re-reading and revising the novel so far (working title:  Winter's End) off the icloud version when I discovered that Chapter III had been text clipped out of existence.  All that was left was its title.  I'd never heard of text clipping before nor had I asked for it nor did there seem to be any way to ( Read more... )

iCloud is probably among the safer and more trustworthy cloud storage providers, but it's not really a backup service. For that you want something like Time Machine (assuming you're on macOS).

In my experience, Word (assuming that is what you use) can be rather picky about integrating with cloud services too. It is possible that you have a Time Machine copy of an earlier version of the file that you could have reverted to or picked up the lost text from, but it's probably best to get someone to help you in person rather than giving advice over the internet.

If nothing else your friendly local Apple store (again assuming macOS) should be able to help you set up a reasonably cheap and simple to use backup plan against data loss and show you how to recover stuff from there.

I already have a time machine/external hard drive -- that would have been the next place I looked -- but I may have needed help recovering data from it as I've never done that before. Always something new to learn....

Recovering via Time Machine is really simple. Sometimes you don't even need the backup drive attached, though it certainly helps. Here is Apple's guide on how to do it: https://support.apple.com/en-us/guide/mac-help/mh11422/mac

OOf. Glad you found it somewhere! Looking forwards to the next one, when it's done.

Wish I could follow you some place that wasn't owned by the Russian government, but so it goes.

I just got through reading the comments on this and I'm glad this isn't a major disaster.
It's scary how quickly your work can disappear on a computer though. I had just completed a major English composition paper back in the 90's and decided that I'd wait and print it out in the morning because I was tired and liable to make mistakes. Woke up the next morning and the computer wouldn't turn on! Luckily the professor gave me a three day extension and I was able to recreate my paper in that length of time. (Best of all, I still made my A for the class!)
I now have an external hard drive for keeping such valuable things.
I am looking forward to your next book!
:^)

Glad you could reclaim your work. Technology can be scary. I also have an external hard-drive which can hopefully can save me. Hopefully.
