I think it has more to do with the time of year, that they'd be happy to have fat people in, say, the middle of February. (you'd probably be applauded!) Not that the sentiment isn't mean, but I'd guess it's mostly the exasperation of "you have all jumped on this bandwagon again, for the millionth time, making my life miserable while you're at it, can't you find something else?"

I used to get that way about Christmas shoppers, back when I worked at Borders. Every other time of the year, I thought hanging out in a bookstore automatically made someone awesome, but that was not true in December. In December, they were all idiots.

True, there are people out there who look down on fat people regardless. Which is an ugly sentiment, you're right. I don't know why we listen to it, 'cause there's no reason to.

That's a fair point, about being frustrated by resolution makers. I can understand that. Maybe she even meant it that way. The derogatory phrasing -- "fattention", really?? -- makes me think otherwise, unfortunately.
