the camera is 4.1 megapixels, and i changed the settings for both shots. they were taken at dimensions of 1600x1200 or something like that... and the lighting was set to auto so i guess it might've been the lights in my house? i dunno, but much appreciated josh =)
It's partly because of the lighting and the settings for the camera. I think if you had enough brightness from the flash you wouldn't see too much of the brightness.
As for the low quality pictures, just experiment with the different settings. My camera came out in 3 different quality settings and out of the box it was set to average.

The resolution might seem low because your dimensions for the picture are too small. Try opening it up on a viewer and zoom in.
