Chapter 8
“Yesung? I know you’re in there. Let me in.”
“Shit. Shit. Shit.” That seemed to be my mantra as I quickly rushed to the door to let Ryeowook in. He just stood there in the doorway a minute before he made his way in to the empty bed. “Hey, Wookie, anything I can help you with?” I was stalling, I know but I was really hoping he wasn’t here about Kyuhyun.
“Did you do that to Kyuhyun’s computer?” He finally said. Well there went that hope.
“Of course I didn’t!” I let the outrage that he would even think that show on my face.
“Well, Kyu seems positive it was you.” He was looking at me like he was studying me.
“Wookie, you know me. I can’t use a computer to save my life. Only one worse than me is Donghae and that’s only because I don’t blow them up.”
Ryeowook seemed to believe me.
“Besides, we were all out together Saturday. I wouldn’t have had time to do it. You make sure and let Kyuhyun know that too.”
Ryeowook just sighed. “You know he’s going to say you did it when we got back. He stayed in my room that night, remember?”
“Yeah, I know he will but you can ask Heechul and Siwon. I was with Kibum most of the night before I went to bed. I had asked them where he was and then they saw me when they came up to work on homework in the room. So I would have had no time to do anything that complex to a computer.” I felt really proud for remembering talking to Heechul and Siwon before I went to Kibum’s room. Ryeowook looked relieved that I had proof I didn’t do it. I felt really bad for lying to him, but it was for his own good.
“Okay, I believe you. I’ll talk with Kyuhyun and tell him he has it wrong.” He started to get up when he paused and faced me “Do you know why everyone seems to think it could have been you?”
“Everyone thinks it’s me!?” I didn’t mean to shout but that surprised me. I must have shocked him because he looked startled.
“Well it’s not them saying you actually did it, just that if you could they would put money on you doing it.” He looked puzzled at that. “Why do they think you would? I know you and you’re a kind person that wouldn’t do that to people.”
Ok, my soul just died a bit right there. Apparently, Wookie doesn’t know me as well as I thought. ‘Or it’s just that you only showed the sweet caring personality to him. So it’s your fault he thinks you’re a kind person.’ I quickly shook my head to clear those thoughts and said “I have no idea either, but I would just ignore them. You know how they like to talk bad about people.” I flashed him my charming smile. He just nodded and started walking toward the door.
“Well, I just wanted to come and ask you this myself. I have to go help Henry with a project that’s due in a couple days.” He reached the door when I stopped him.
“Hey, Wookie, can I ask a kind of personal question?” I don’t know why I was actually asking this but I couldn’t get my mouth to shut up.
He turned back. “Yes. You know you can ask me anything.” He flashed me that sweet innocent smile. “What does Kyuhyun mean to you?” ‘Stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid.’
I watched as he tensed up and his smile looked more forced now. “What do you mean, Yesung?”
“You’re spending a lot of time with him and I was curious.” I had to look away from him and toward the floor.
“He is just a good friend. We are the same age and we share the same interests so I guess we’re close friends.” I looked up in time to see him turn away. I hadn’t had time to see his face. “Well if there is nothing else I’m going to go help Henry now.” He left.
I was sitting there for like 10 minutes in a daze. I finally got up and walked toward my turtle tank. I looked in, making sure he was alive. I watched as his head turned up toward me. It looked like to me that he wanted out. I picked him up and took him to my desk and turned the lamp desk on to make sure he stays a little warm. As I watched him slowly explore the desk I couldn’t help but think that Ryeowook didn’t have to lie to me. We have been friends long enough that he should be able to tell me he likes someone. I wanted to go and call him on it but I had to remind myself that I really didn’t want to hear him say it. I sighed and leaned down so I was level with the small turtle. “You like me, don’t you?” The little bastard went into his shell and just stayed there. “Fine, who wants a turtle to like them?” I huffed and leaned back in my chair.
That thought made me think about Hangeng. ‘I know why he’s avoiding me now. I need to talk with him and clear things up. It’s not that I didn’t like him or anything. I actually really wanted to be his friend. I just wanted more time with Wookie and since I always had to be with Hangeng, Kyuhyun got more time with Ryeowook.’
I sat up and watched the reptile get closer to the edge of the desk. I was wondering if it was going to stop or just keep on going. It just kept on walking and fell onto my pillow. All its limbs shot back into its shell, and I couldn’t help but chuckle. I went and picked him back up and put him back in his tank. “Thanks for that little distraction. Even for those couple seconds I was able to think of something else. Here, I’ll turn the radio on for you, I know you like it.” I turned, flicked the alarm radio on and sat back at the desk.
With thoughts of Ryeowook not being honest with me and trying to figure out how to get Hangeng to just listen to me, I happen to catch what song was playing on the radio. It was the song that had woke me up too early almost a week ago from Kibum’s little prank. I looked back over to the tank and knew just what I needed to distract myself today.
Wookie would be busy with Henry (and more than likely Kyuhyun) and I knew I would have no chance to talk with Hangeng. So why don’t I take my mind off them by getting Kibum back for the alarm? ‘Nothing big.’ I was thinking. ‘Just something to say ‘ha ha I can do it to.’
Then it hit me. He set mine early so I’ll just turn his off. It’s cool if he misses his first class. I realized a flaw in it right off the bat and that flaw was Siwon. I knew he would wake him up in the morning because he’s a nice roommate. I just had to go and talk with him. I’m sure we could come to an arrangement. I got up and left my room, pausing trying to think where he would be. ‘Duh, he’s probably with Heechul.’ I thought as I went in search of Heechul. I might as well try out Siwon’s room first.
I knocked on the door, and then stuck my head in. I saw Kibum on his bed reading and Donghae was lying with him with his head on his stomach. I couldn’t help glaring at him. “Yes, Yesung? You need something?” Kibum’s voice managed to get me to focus on him.
“Umm, yes. I’m looking for Heechul. I wanted to ask about this morning.” Kibum cocked an eyebrow at me.
“Why would he be here? Have you checked his room yet?” Donghae just turned his head back and forth as we talked.
“Well, I figured he would be here because it’s Siwon’s room and he’s always with Siwon and I’m kind of scared to go to his room right now. I was hoping my luck would be better and he would be here.”
Kibum just flipped a page in the book and put his hand back in Donghae’s hair. “Well as you can see he’s not here. I don’t know where Siwon is and I assume Heechul is either with him or in the common room.”
I was doing a good job at ignoring Donghae and I think Kibum picked up on me being rude but I didn’t care. “Well, thanks. I’ll leave you to it then and look elsewhere.” I turned, left the room and as I was closing I heard Donghae ask Kibum what my problem was. I wanted so much to rush back in and yell at Donghae, but I knew if I do that it would just make it worse. I sighed and set off toward the common room. I entered and saw Eunhyuk and Shindong at a table playing a card game with Kangin and Sungmin standing near the doorway looking like they were arguing. I couldn’t help but think if Kangin would just lean forward a bit they would kiss and that would get rid of most my headaches.
I spotted Heechul pouting next to Leeteuk on the couch. I walked over and sat near him. “Hey Heechul, do you know where Siwon is?”
He turned and glared at me. “Does it look like I know where that ass is? I can tell you where he is not and that’s here. Why do I have to know where he is anyway?”
I looked at him, startled. “Because you’re always with him or know where he is.” I honestly thought so. At least it seemed that way.
“Well, I don’t. Every once in a while, he will disappear and I have no idea where he is. I’ve already looked in all the normal places but it seems he got creative this time.” He huffed and turned to Leeteuk “Teukie, I’m bored and lonely and I want my Siwonie” He whined.
Leeteuk just rolled his eyes. “You are such a baby. Why don’t you go play a game, do homework or go shopping?” I decided then was a good time to leave.
As I was leaving, I saw Kangin glaring at Sungmin. I decided to give Kangin a break and walked over to Sungmin. “Hey Sungmin, Heechul is being kind of down with Siwon not here. How about you ask him to go out to the mall with you?” His eyes lit up when I mentioned shopping and he skipped off toward Heechul.
Kangin threw me a grateful look and went toward the kitchen. Now I had a problem. I didn’t know where Siwon was. I decided to go to the cafeteria first. Students like to go there after hours to study because it’s mostly quiet. I got to it and it was mostly empty. A couple of students dotted the tables. None were Siwon, to my dismay.
I did see one of the girls that happen to enjoy staring at Siwon. I walked over to Tiffany. All I got was a glare when I made it to her table. “What do you want, Yesung?” Was her chilly greeting. It took me a minute to remember why I was getting this cold reaction. She was one of the many girls I’ve managed piss off. In my defense, it was Heechul that cut her pigtail off last year. She had been attempting to get Siwon to go out with her and Heechul was having none of that. Only reason she was mad at me was because when she turned around, I was holding the pigtail. She is convinced it was me and nothing anyone could say could get her to change her mind.
“Hey Tiffany. How’s it going? Your hair is looking good.” I was trying to be nice but all I got was an intense burn-in-hell glare.
“Whatever it is you’re trying to sell or ask me, the answer is no.”
“Aww, Tiffany I’ve said I was sorry even though I didn’t do it. Anyways, all I want to know is if you have seen Siwon in here today?” I pleaded.
“No, I haven’t seen Siwon in here to study since last Sunday and Heechul had come in and dragged him out. Now leave me alone.” She said all this as she turned back to her homework. I thought it best to make a retreat now that I knew he wasn’t here. I was trying to think of places that Heechul would not go.
The Dance building came to mind. A quick walk-through over there showed nothing but a couple of students practicing. I was getting desperate. I knew Heechul would have checked the choir and drama buildings. I headed to the Library hoping to look at the more obvious places. I was cautious walking in the library. I was not the librarian’s favorite student. I made sure this time I was quiet, watching where I was walking to make sure not to knock over the book trolley (the librarian really hates that.)
I saw Shindong sitting really close to a girl I couldn’t recognize. I walked over to the table quickly and saw that it was Sunny. I thought he was dating Hyoyeon, but oh well. I’ll ask about it later.
I started whispering to him. “Hey Shindong, have you seen Siwon hiding around in here?”
He leaned away from Sunny. “No, I don’t think I have. I’ve been busy helping Sunny study so I have not really been paying attention.”
I looked down at Sunny’s closed book and just raised my eyebrow at him. He just smiled wider. Sunny all of a sudden spoke up and startled me. I’m not used to girls actually talking nicely to me. “Siwon is in the girl’s dorm studying in a corner of our common room.”
“I’m sorry, what?” I could not believe Siwon, mister abs and wet dreams for girls, is sitting in their den.
“He came in and looked panic, so I asked him what’s wrong. He said he really needed to study but Heechul wouldn’t let him. I don’t understand why Heechul doesn’t but I just told him to go to our common room to study since most the girls are out.” She smiled at me when she finished telling me. I made a mental note to make sure to be nice to her.
“Thanks.” I bowed and left. Before I made it too far away I heard Shindong whisper something and Sunny giggle like she was on crack. I was sure he was with that other girl but it’s not uncommon to see him with other girls. A lot of the younger guys in the other dorm really look up to him. I made my way over to the girl’s dorm. I was kind of scared to go in but since Sunny said most of the girls were gone I wasn’t as frightened. I made it in relatively unseen. A couple girls saw me, but I didn’t know who they were and that meant they didn’t know me.
Their dorm was set up like ours so it wasn’t hard to find their common room. I found Siwon sitting at a corner table trying to stay out of sight. He had books all around him and he had his glasses on. I could see why Heechul liked to interrupt Siwon’s studying if he always studied like that. I walked over and placed my hand on his shoulder.
I never knew Siwon scared easily.
He yelled out, flew from his chair and turned toward me with a terrified look. “Yesung?!”
I just cocked my eyebrow at him. He seemed to realize how he looked because he started blushing, embarrassed. “I thought you were a girl, or worse, Heechul.”
“You were that scared because you thought I was a girl?” I couldn’t really believe that part, although I believed he would have freaked if it was Heechul. He just shrugged, still blushing. “They are scary here, but I needed to study.”
“Why are you studying here anyway?” I knew he was avoiding Heechul but not why.
“I’m studying here to get away from Heechul. I love my boyfriend to death but apparently, I’m not allowed to study near him. As soon as I start trying to, he jumps me. My grades are starting to wilt a bit. I have no idea why he won’t let me. I’ve asked him why and he says he’s not stopping me from studying. Sometimes he has even told me to study, but 5 minutes after I start, he jumps me.”
I couldn’t help but think about poor Siwon. He even had a distressed, confused look on his face as he told me this. “Ah, well I came looking for you because I need your help with something.”
He looked at me with caution in his eyes “What kind of help?”
I smiled and said “I need to get back at Kibum for a thing he did to my alarm and I need you to help.”
He looked disapproving at me. “Yesung, it seems like you want to do something mean and I can’t help with that.”
How Heechul got such a nice and pure boy is beyond me. “He started it. I just want to turn his alarm off so he wakes up late. All I need you to do is not wake him up and to leave your room unlocked tonight. I’m not asking you to do anything.” He looked like he was about to refuse so I had to throw in my bribe. “If you do this, you can use my room to study in. You know I have it to myself and no one really visits me.”
His eyes lit up, but he still looked undecided.
“Or, you can keep coming back in here. You got lucky today with no girls, but normally there are way more in here and you risk Heechul figuring out where you are.”
His eyes widened at that. I was sure I got him, but I threw in: “When you use my room, you can lock the door.”
He finally said, “I don’t actually have to do anything right? I just have to leave the door unlocked and don’t wake him?”
“That’s right. You do that, and you get to use my room. I’m also pretty sure he won’t know he was pranked. He uses his phone as his alarm, so all I have to do is turn it off.” I smiled at him. He just shook his head and asked if he could start using it for an hour starting tomorrow. I just nodded and made my way back to my dorm.
The couple of minutes it took to hunt down Siwon were the best. I didn’t have a thought about Hangeng or Ryeowook for that time. Now I’m too tired to actually think about anything but to wait for it to get late enough to go to Kibum’s room.
After a few hours, I looked at my phone and saw it was late enough to head over. I snuck across the hall to their room, hoping Siwon was able to keep it unlocked. I reached for the door and turned it. Success. It was unlocked. I crept in silently. Unlike when I snuck into Zhoumi’s room, I knew how this room was laid out and which bed was Kibum’s.
I walked over to the bed not worrying about tripping because both these guys were very neat and wouldn’t leave anything on the floor. I reached his bed and looked on the table next to it hoping Kibum put his phone there like he usually did. There it was all shiny and powered up. I took it and flipped it open away from Kibum’s pillows so the light wouldn’t wake him up. His wallpaper was of him and Donghae posing together and looking really cute. I had this urge to erase that, but knew better so I just turned it off and placed it back how he had it.
The return trip to my room was fast and as I got in my bed I did a quick rundown on what I had to do tomorrow.
‘First, I have to figure out how to talk to Hangeng and then I have to try and talk with Ryeowook when he’s not around Kyuhyun.’
The last thought before I fell asleep was wondering which one would be the impossible one because they both seemed that way.
