Missing Chances

Chapter 2
The teacher pulled us aside before we could leave the classroom.

She said, “You both are excused from the rest of your classes today. Yesung, you can use this chance to show Hangeng around campus without having to worry about the crowds.” She smiled and let the two of us go.

I groaned. I was looking forward to my next class with Ryeowook.

Before we started walking I stopped him and asked for his schedule. He handed it over without speaking. I looked over his class sheet and gasped. ‘This is not happening to me.’

My eyes went from him to the sheet over and over again. He was giving me puzzled looks. ‘I can’t believe this; he is in all my classes except two.’

Suddenly a horrible thought came to me. “Quick what’s your dorm room number?” I asked him.

He looked like he wasn’t sure whether to answer or not. He finally said “Dorm B 187.”

I was so relieved. “Thank god. You’re two rooms down from me.” I just happen to catch a flash of emotion in his eyes but it was gone before I could tell what it was. I realized how rude I just sounded and I was getting uncomfortable with his silence. I felt the need to attempt to make this better. “I was afraid that I would have to put aside my solitude.” I started sheepishly. “I have only lived alone for a couple months and I am starting to like it.” I turned so I was looking at him “I’m sorry. All of that came out really rude. I’m normally much better at controlling my mouth.” I lied through a smile.

He seemed to relax a little at that. I started to feel really bad about lying but I couldn’t very well tell him that I didn’t want to help him.

To quickly change the subject, I just started talking “So are you ready for a tour around the campus?”

He nodded.

We started walking around the school grounds and I pointed out the buildings. “Most of the facilities and buildings are separated by gender, but some, like the gym and library, are co-op. So if you want to meet a girl, I suggest you hang around there.”

Again, he did nothing but nod.

‘Is he a freaking stone? Why won’t he talk?’ I thought.

I was starting to get frustrated with his silence.

Instead of getting on his case about it, I explained the school’s three main departments and how they each had recitals coming up in about a month. Then, I showed him the two dorm buildings for the guys, and that Dorm B was the one with our rooms.

I stopped walking, remembering something important I should say. “Hey, Hangeng, there is something I should warn you about the guys in our dorm.”

He turns to me, looking puzzled.

“Well, you see, the thing is…” I started to fidget, getting uncomfortable. “Um, well, the majority of the guys in our dorm are gay. Some are more….obvious than others.”

I waited for his reaction.

He finally speaks. “It’s fine. It doesn’t bother me.”
“That’s it? You’re fine with it? I just said an entire building is full of gay guys and you’re fine?” I said.

I totally didn’t mean to go off on him, but this was far from what I expected. Not that I expected much, but normal people would have found that information odd and said something other than ‘I’m fine.’

He looked startled, which I can understand. “Well?” I asked. I really wanted to know what he thought.

He was starting to look uncomfortable and I couldn’t help but think how cute he looked.

Before I could follow that thought anywhere, he stuttered out: “It’s ju-ju-just that, well, I’m the sa-same.” He looked away.

Okay, now I felt really bad for pressuring him to answer. I quickly threw my arm around his shoulders, in a way I hoped he thought was friendly, and said “Look, I’m really sorry for putting you on the spot like that. Trust me when I say we don’t mind at all and won’t hold it against you”.

He looked relieved, but didn’t say anything else. I was kind of put out. I’m not used to talking to someone who made no effort to talk back.

I just felt the need to keep talking to keep things from getting awkward. I found myself explaining why I brought up the gay issue. “I just had to make sure you were okay with us all being gay. Because your room mate, Zhoumi, is one of the more obvious ones and I wanted to make sure no one would get hurt from it.”

He nodded, then said “No, it’s okay. I understand why you did it and I’m sure we will be fine.”

It was my turn to nod. It was the longest sentence he’d said.

I continued showing him around.

When we got to the dorms, a lot of the students were getting out of their classes. I told him that Dorm B had three floors.

After showing him the kitchen and laundry area on the first floor, I took him to the big common room. A few of my friends were there, so I thought this was a good chance to introduce Hangeng to more people.

“Hangeng, I’d like you to meet some of my friends and your dorm mates.” I said. “That’s Youngwoon or, as we call him, Kangin and Henry playing the PlayStation 3.”

At the mention of their names, they turned and waved. “Henry, Hangeng is from China, so you’ll have someone other than Zhoumi to speak Chinese with.”

“Sweet. It’s nice to meet you, Hangeng.” Henry said, bounding up to bow to him.

I looked over at Hangeng to see what he would do. He did like I figured he would, simply say “Hi” and return the bow.

‘My god, he really is like a stone.’ I thought as I spotted Kibum near the window.

“The one reading by the window is Kibum.” I said. The two just nodded to each other but with Kibum, I didn’t expect anything else.

After a couple moments of just standing there awkwardly, I thought it was time to pass Hangeng off to his roommate so I could have time to plan.

I turned to Hangeng and lightly pulled him towards the stairs. “Right, well I think it’s time I took you up to your room so you can get to know your roommate. Plus, I’m sure you’re tired and want to relax.”

Before we got all the way up the stairs I yelled to Kibum, “Oh, Kibum, can you come up to my room when you have a chance? I need to talk with you.”

I looked back long enough to see him nod at me, and then I continued to lightly pull Hangeng up the stairs and to his room. I kind of felt bad for just ditching him like this, but I need time to figure out a plan to get back at Kyu. Surely, Kibum knew how to help.

We got to Zhoumi’s room and some high-pitched girl group song was escaping from the room at top volume. We could also hear (in a slightly deeper voice, but just as high-pitched) a male voice singing in Chinese with the song.

I grimaced and turned toward Hangeng, “I’ll just say, honestly, I hope you last longer than his last roommate. If you need anything at all, my room is right there.” I turned and pointed to my door two doors down.

Suddenly, he spoke. “What happened to his last roommate?” He actually looked kind of scared.

“Oh, it wasn’t anything bad. It’s just, well, Zhoumi is a bit much.” I admitted honestly, hoping I didn’t make it worse.

He just exhaled, relaxing. “Oh, okay then.”

“Okay, well just go on in and introduce yourself. He knows you’re on the way and remember I’ll be right here if something happens.” I walked to my own room, once again feeling a little bad as I left him to Zhoumi. I’m sure he’ll be fine though, and I need time to myself right now.

Not long after I had sat down at my desk, Kangin came busting into my room. “Oh my god, Yesung, you have to help me!”

I felt my eye start to twitch when he sat on my bed. ‘Great. This is just what I need, Kangin bitching about his roommate again.’ I thought.

I’m sure that is what this is all about anyway. What he said next just confirmed my thoughts. “Sungmin is driving me insane. He got even more clothes yesterday and he has them all over the room trying to decide which clothes to keep and which to send home to his parents. Our room looks like a hot pink clown was killed in there. Yesung, this is the last straw. I have to ask to switch rooms with someone.” He said all this in one breath.

I sighed. ‘He says that every Monday after every one of Sungmin’s shopping weekends but he never actually talks to Leeteuk about switching rooms. He just talks my ear off.’

“Kangin, just go to your room, clear off your bed, lie down and take a nap. When you wake up, I’m sure all of his clothes will be moved. Now get out of here. I’m waiting for Kibum and I need to talk to him privately.” I got up to push him towards the door. “Trust me; you don’t want to switch rooms. Leeteuk might decide to switch you and the new guy and then you’ll be rooming with Zhoumi.”

I shut the door on his terrified face.

I laughed and sat back down at my desk, waiting for Kibum.

Luckily, I didn’t have to wait long. About 15 minutes later Kibum came in after knocking, “What’s going on Yesung?”

I smiled evilly, turning in my chair and crossing my legs as I looked at him. “I’m trying to seek revenge, and I heard that you’re amazing at that sort of thing.”

His evil smile matched mine. “What do you plan on giving me for this help?”

I had this in the bag.

‘Kyuhyun won’t know what hit him’ I thought as we started planning.
