I waited to read this post until after I had seen the episode (this evening!). I think, after the end of 5.05, that there is a good chance there never will be a big reveal. Especially since this season is going to be the last. I just don't think there's time. They built the perfect, perfect moment for a reveal with that fireside conversation. I was totally caught up in the moment when watching that scene as well and I agree- it felt like Merlin's decision not to tell. But the writers obviously had a hand in this to, and I think them making this perfect opportunity and then having Merlin decide not to say was their way of saying that there never will be a reveal. How does that make me feel? Frankly, its heartbreaking. It means that Merlin never gets to share all of who he is with Arthur. That Arthur never gets to know exactly how much Merlin has done and sacrificed for him. That Merlin never trusts Arthur with everything, and Arthur never even knows that one last level of trust was not given to him ( ... )

Hmm. Well, what's interesting to me, after re-reading my post (after reading your comment) is that I clearly wrote this not knowing season 5 would be the last one. The news hadn't been released yet. So what I was thinking was that, oh if we don't get a magic reveal this season it'll just get dragged on as a plot point for next season, and the next, and I really didn't want to do the whole Red John thing, you know? I...do think that what you said is a valid point but I'm going to put myself in a little bubble of denial and say that we (might) still get one this season. Not the one that we all want as fans, but it might happen. I want one with fallout and with consequences and with more Fireside Chat and Eyesex Moments. But obviously I think the time for that is passed. But I just have really complicated feelings about a reveal in general, as I said in this post. Even in fic my feelings are very complicated and particular. I do think that it's a...distressing and interesting thing that Merlin still hasn't trust Arthur enough to admit ( ... )

I agree, if this wasn't the last season there would be a risk of the magic reveal being something that got dragged on and on... that fate, at least, has been avoided! I am often in the Arthur Knows camp as well, because the alternative is to believe that Arthur is a complete moron. (I accidentally typed mormon there.) He was a idiot for many episodes in the mid-seasons, but he's been much less of one lately! I actually think the way Arthur asked Merlin, over that camp fire, it almost seemed like he did know then. Like he was asking for confirmation, not for a new fact. But idk! We'll just have to wait and see what happens. Then read fix-it fic when its all over ( ... )

Reincarnation Christmas special, mmmmm. Do want do want do want.

And actually I feel the same way about Arthur, re: the campfire talk and how it seemed like he was asking for confirmation. I could sit here and compile a whole list of times that I think prove Arthur knows, or at least justifies my belief that Arthur knows, and that moment would be on it. So would the most recent episode. Which I won't say anything more about in case you haven't watched it. But I have many ~~opinions about Arthur Knowing after that episode.
