Also, the books are SUPPOSED to think he's mean. They're essentially from Harry's perspective. It's all about how JK Rowling wants to portray her characters. Snape is mean to Harry throughout all of the books. There's no reason for us to think he's anything but a bad person. However, we learn from the final book that the reason he looks so disdainfully on Harry is because he is the reminder of the choice Lilly made between him and James. Also that he is good because he made the ultimate sacrifice by being a spy. This does make him a good person deep down, but it doesn't mean that he is an awesomely amazing person with a great personality. He's not portrayed as likable, therefore, people don't like him very much.
