I think Jo knows this

This is exactly why I can't figure out what the heck this is. Honestly, I don't know what to feel. I was really, really excited when I first heard about it but ... I don't know anymore. It's really difficult for me to imagine that this is actually an idea that Jo came up with (unless it is an online encyclopedia), and not an idea from Warner Bros to keep the HP franchise alive and profitable.

And, yes, nothing would be as exciting as a prequel. Or as any book in the HP verse, really, even if it were about the next generation. I find it really hard to believe that Jo herself thinks we'll find whatever this is as exciting as a new book.

The prospect of having to interact with all Harry Potter fans, and not just my fandom bubble, is kind of horrifying/squicky to me.I'm LOLing right now, but IT'S SO TRUE. It's not even about the age of new fans or about our specific SQ bubble ... I just really hate most fandoms outside of LJ. And HP is not exactly a small fandom; it's not as if we needed this official site to ( ... )

Oh, I think it's definitely not a WB thing. This has the flavor of JK Rowling and her PR team ALL OVER IT with the clues and the style of the website and the surprise timing. Plus, Jo's signiture is on the website. To me, that means 110% Jo approved. Her signature is on nothing except her own books and her own website.

Hm. Yeah, those are all good points. :)

It's just ... I'm not sure exactly. I'm just so thrown by the actual content (or, at least, the leaked pictures) and the "equally exciting" line. The set-up, like you said, has JK all over it (which I love, btw. Her clues are the greatest). And I suppose the site does as well since, like you pointed out, it has her signature. I'll just be very disappointed if it turns out to be a social network or an MMORPG (like some people are suggesting), because I would think Jo would know neither of those things are remotely comparable to a new book.

I think that if it is a super in depth MMORPG, then it will actually be super exciting! But nothing is ever on par with a new book.

All the coordinates so far lead to quidditch related things, so obviously JK Rowling has invented a real flying broom, and is personally organizing the first ever Real Live Quidditch league. I for one am excited to try out for beater for my soon to be founded local team. :)

Seriously, though. I have absolutely no idea. Honestly, the idea of an HP social networking site, while horrifying in many regards, would also be... idk. Kind of awesome. Just as a way to get back into fandom, even. I would have to try really hard not to troll all the mortifying tiny fans on it, but I would totally use it.

I really have no clue. I'd kill for a prequel, almost don't want any sequels at this point because, 1) they could quite possibly just be more of the epilogue and I couldn't deal with the fan bitching about that and 2) I've sort of developed a ridiculously involved head canon for the children and would be weirdly depressed if JKR wrote about them and went against that in any way. And sadly, she can't actually read my mind. (Or maybe that's a ( ... )

I think it's the opposite for me -- I have way more headcanon about MWPP than about the next gen -- but I know exactly what you mean. Honestly, that's why as much as I would kill for a new novel, prequel or sequel, I'd rather have an encyclopedia or any Wizarding World book (Hogwarts, A History, please!).

Yeah, Prequel >>>> Sequel. I'd be so terrified that a sequel would ruin the series, and kick it out of classics status. It would be really hard for fans to accept a sequel in general, and it would just seem lame. However, we are all interested in a prequel, and that would just add to the enjoyment of the main series!

Somebody pointed this out on ONTD:

POTTER Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Experience?

Thoughts?

A MMORPG would be great. But, again, not as good as a book.

THIS SOUNDS ON TARGET. That would be SO COOL, if it was like a second life type thing? OMG.

I'd probably be like "WHY ARE YOU ALL SO YOUNG? WHY ARE YOU ALL SO AWKWARD?" which is how I feel about a lot of HP fandom things sometimes. You know, when I first got into HP fandom, a bunch of people about my age at the time - thirteen-sixteen - and myself started posting to this forum intended for adult fans. They... were not thrilled about us being there, and were not shy about making it clear we weren't really welcome. Whatever, we were there, and I thought they ought to get over ( ... )

Thinking back to when I was a kid though, I don't think I did much of that. I'm sure my comments weren't quite as insightful as the others, but I remember striving to be smart on the Quill forums etc when I was 14.

Of course, I'm probably being very hypocritical.

I knew you back then, and you definitely didn't. I don't think I did much of that either, but I can't remember if the other teens at the boards I went to did or didn't.

And Sugar Quill really made it clear it was a place for intelligent, worthwhile speculation and discussion. The mods reinforced that. Not all communities do - I've complained to some mods and admins before and was pretty much told to get over it or leave.

I have to be fair, though, because not only is it absolutely true that not all teen fans are like that (as demonstrated by you and I), but adults can be like that as well. I can think of one community specifically where people talked like that and I'd go to their profiles to find out they were in their twenties and thirties. As another SQ friend pointed out once, I think Sugar Quill spoiled us a bit, because conversations were so focused and in-depth.

Then again, even at SQ there were a few people who still acted silly in ways that got ( ... )

1. The prospect of having to interact with all Harry Potter fans, and not just my fandom bubble, is kind of horrifying/squicky to me. I know, still snobby thanks to the Quill after all these years, but in a different way now? I'd probably be like "WHY ARE YOU ALL SO YOUNG? WHY ARE YOU ALL SO AWKWARD?" which is how I feel about a lot of HP fandom things sometimes.

I'm about to begin writing a paper on interpretive communities for my media criticism class - naturally, I'm going to discuss the Quill. Can I use your hilarious quote? :)

2. If the website turns out to be a Second Life type thing, I don't think I'll ever leave my house again. XD So addictive.

Of course, I'd be flattered! Send me your paper when you're done, I'd be interested to read it!

It would be the best/worst thing ever. I would totally lose my real life.
