Summary: Let's remember that even though Yuma sorta has this unit called NYC now, he was a Kansai Junior first. (Takes place early 2010 before the spring concert)
It's been a while since the Kansai Juniors were given concerts at a larger venue like Osaka Jo Hall. Two years, as Akito likes to keep reminding them. Shows at Shochikuza and the Umeda Arts Theater are nice because the setting is more intimate, but at Osaka Jo Hall, they can spread out and do more. It's easy to see that everyone is excited as they file into the first planning meeting. They all take pride in making sure that their concerts are fun and that every member of the audience goes home wishing that they could see the show again. This time should be no different.
Sitting down between Hamada and Shigeoka, Yuma's glad that he can still be a part of the Kansai Junior concerts. It's nice doing things in Tokyo and he's started to make friends there, real friends, but he's most comfortable here and sometimes, it's just good to be home. At least, that's how he feels until the meeting starts and the staff open their mouths. They're told that they not only need to pay close attention to balancing out stage time between all the different units, but that they have to do that and promote Yuma as much as possible.
Yuma feels terrible.
The basic outline of the concert comes first. They have to form a general idea about who appears in what order before they can decide on which songs each unit will sing. They toss around ideas, trying to figure out how they can push Yuma to the front while still making sure the concert will be fun for the fans of other units.
"Um... No," Daichi says to the latest suggestion. "It probably wouldn't be a good idea for videos of Yuma played throughout all the songs. That might just piss the audience off."
It's mostly the older ones speaking up, Yuma and the members of 7WEST not entirely sure how they can contribute, Yuma's face feeling hot just listening. He can see that the rest of 7WEST feel the same. If he's being pushed to the front, so is 7WEST by extension and while they are gaining popularity, they all know who majority of the fans will be there to see. It's a little awkward.
Yuma opens his mouth again to apologize for causing everyone so much trouble, but Hamada only shushes him before any words can come out and murmurs quietly so only Yuma can hear, "Stop that. It's not your fault. We'll figure something out."
He gives Hamada a small smile and when Hamada immediately returns it, it dawns on Yuma that he’s really not upset that Yuma’s getting special treatment. Turning his attention back to the discussion going on around him, he realizes that none of the annoyance in any of their voices is actually directed at him, and the knot in his chest loosens a little.
In the end, they decide on something that they can for the most part all agree on. Start off the concert with Yuma, 7WEST and the other Junior units, allowing Yuma and 7WEST to lead the beginning part of the concert, giving them exposure. After about 30 minutes, B.A.D., BOYS, and Veteran will come out and get mini unit corners. They'll have the MC segment and then they'll take turns again after that until the ending portion and encores.
"But won't the fans feel like we've taken over the show?" Shigeoka asks, worry clear in his voice. Yuma wonders the same thing and watches everyone's faces carefully, waiting for their answer.
"Won't lie, but they might think that initially," Daichi says. "But I can't think of any other way to go about doing this."
"And as long as everyone can keep the energy up, it should be fine," Junta comments, smiling. "We'll just have to make sure they don't still feel that way when they leave the concert now, won't we."
OPENING | Nakayama Yuma w/ Hey!Say!7WEST
"The first song should be Romantic," Kikuoka says in a loud voice, making sure that everyone can hear him.
"Don't you mean UME Goin On!?" asks Ito. "When people think of the Kansai Juniors, wouldn't they think of that before Romantic?"
"But if Yuma and 7WEST are opening the concert, why not use NYC?" Muro voices.
"Romantic!" Kikuoka says firmly.
"NYC!" Muro says back, leaning forward.
"ROMANTIC!!!"
"NYC!!!"
They all decide on UME Goin On! after putting it to a vote, but not without Kikuoka having to be sent to the corner to reflect on his actions. The other Veteran members assure them that it's all for the best and they continue to plan the the set list.
When the staff tell them which units need to be included in the opening intros, Yuma pauses, hearing a unit he’s never heard of, but then he sees that he’s not the only one.
"Who's 'Kyo Otoko'?" Daichi asks.
Peering over at the clipboard of the staff member standing closest to him, Ryuta's jaw drops a little. "Ryota has a new unit? Does he know that?"
"Another one?" Akito says.
Ito clears his throat, cutting off any further comments on Senzaki’s luck with units. "Ok. So, after Shadow West, Kyo Otoko will get introduced..."
Veteran | BOYS | B.A.D.
"Ok, you ready?" Shigeoka asks, designated to be the ‘unbiased’ referee. Daichi is representing BOYS, Akito standing in for B.A.D., and Kunta for Veteran while the rest of them watch in open amusement.
"Kunta! FIGHT-O~!" Ryuta shouts.
"Don't lose!" Muro adds, while Ito claps a hand down on Kunta's shoulder.
Still facing the wall, Kikuoka calls out, "Kunta~!"
"You know what's going to happen if you lose, right?" Bunichi asks from his seat, not flinching at all when Kunta looks at him and then around at the other members of Veteran in panic.
"Ee!?"
Daichi rolls his shoulder to warm up while Akito cracks his knuckles. "Yosh~!"
"Ready~"
"No..." Kunta whimpers as if it had been a question. Everyone ignores him.
"Saisho gu! Janken hoi!"
They all freeze to look at the results. Daichi and Akito have both thrown rock, with Kunta throwing paper.
"YES~!" Kunta shouts in glee, as Daichi and Akito go another round. "I won!"
The order they'll go in in Veteran, BOYS, and B.A.D..
CHOOSING SONGS
Veteran
"We... don't have a lot to choose from." Muro sighs while Kunta nods his head. It takes a moment before Yuma remembers how new Veteran is as an official unit, because to him, they’ve been around since forever.
Ryuta clears his throat. "We only have one song, you mean. So, we've got S.O.S. and..."
"Kanfuu Fighting," Bunichi says nodding. "The second song should definitely be Kanfuu Fighting."
"Kiku-san!" Ito calls over, after a moment's pause. "Time-out's over. Get back over here and help!"
BOYS
"I think we should do STAY GOLD instead of Love or Guilty," Hamada says when it's their turn. "It's a good song and I think the fans like it a lot."
Daichi nods. "Yeah. Not a bad idea."
"I like the hand motions for that song," Akito pipes up. "Te wo nobase~! Everyone will feel more involved."
Since no one can disagree with him, no matter how much Daichi looks like he wants to say something just because it's Akito, it's decided. In the first half of the concert, BOYS will perform STAY GOLD and Battle.
B.A.D.
As soon as the staff ask what songs B.A.D. want to perform, Akito immediately pipes up. "I want a dramatic entry!"
Everyone laughs, Junta included, because that's not exactly a song title, but then he suddenly stops. "There won't be any flying or anything like appearing on a rope hanging from the ceiling, right?" Junta asks, face paling slightly.
"No," the staff member says, looking through his papers. "It's not really within our budget to--"
"Perfect," Junta says quickly and shows no indication that he can hear everyone laughing.
V.I.P. is an obvious choice and apparently Akito thinks so too, singing bits of it as if everyone in the room needs to be reminded what it sounds like, not that Yuma needs the help. He clearly remembers when he saw B.A.D. perform V.I.P. for the first time. Everyone looked like they were having so much fun on stage that he’d wished he could still backdance for them.
When Akito gets towards the end of the first verse, Junta sighs and says in a pained voice, "Can you stop singing, 'Amai NUDE'? It’s 'Amai MOOD'. This song has enough sexual innuendos in it without you changing the lyrics."
Akito grins cheekily at him. "Aw... where would the fun in that be?"
Let's remember that even though Yuma sorta has this unit called NYC now, he was a Kansai Junior first.
"But I wanna sing Koishite Akuma, too~!" Akito whines before leaning across the table to pout at Yuma from point blank. "I can sing with you guys, right?"
"Sure," Yuma says because there’s really no way he can say ‘no’ with Akito right in his face.
Whooping in victory, Akito turns to Daichi. "In your face! He said I could be in it, too!"
Ryusei clears his throat and pulls back slightly when everyone's attention suddenly turns to him and away from where Akito and Daichi have started slapping at each other like girls. "Wouldn't it be kind of neat if we all sang it together? Like, take turns singing with Yuma and then all come together at the end?" he suggests in a hesitant voice.
"Nice idea!" Hamada says, encouraging Ryusei to continue.
"I think, it'd be a good way to show that we all support him and his Tokyo activities without just saying that we do." The words are barely out of his mouth before Ryusei is pulled out of his chair and into a headlock, Kunta ruffling his hair.
"Who said you were allowed to grow up and say cool things like that?" Kunta says, not at all letting up and Yuma uses laughter to suppress the tears he feels rising in his throat.
MC
"Daichi and Akito on the ends and talk majority of the time," Muro says. "Ok. Moving on."
Love Songs
"Sayonara ~Futari no Sora~ would be a good contrast to STAY GOLD and Battle,” Daichi says and they all watch as Bunichi stands up to drape himself around Hamada's shoulders.
Bunichi sends Daichi a level stare. "You can't have him."
"He's my partner, not yours, and do you have to start that up right at this moment?"
Yuma’s obviously missed something because it’s apparent that he’s the only one confused by this whole thing, but before he can nudge Shigeoka for an explanation, Daichi turns to one of the staff members, frustration clear. "We'll sing Sayonara ~Futari no Sora~."
"Ok. Veteran is next," she says easily, looking up from her papers at them expectantly.
Bunichi only manages to shout, "Kanf--" before Muro reaches out to clamp a hand over his mouth.
Ito bows his head apologetically to the staff members while Muro pulls Bunichi back into his seat. "Can you move on to B.A.D. for now? We're going to need a moment."
"Ew! He licked me!"
If you're not at the meeting, songs get assigned to you by staff
"Big Gang will perform Shelter, Jr.BOYS will do a short dance routine and then--"
Yuma tunes out the rest of whatever the staff is listing off in favor of watching Shingaki. He doesn't seem to be paying any more attention than Yuma, playing with the colorful string of Kotaki's hoodie.
And sometimes, even if you ARE there, they still get assigned to you
"We'd like Nakayama-kun and 7WEST to sing Happy Birthday to You!! since he took part in writing the lyrics, but we want you to lead into the song by reading a fan letter."
"A fan letter?" Shigeoka asks, voicing the confusion Yuma feels. It makes sense and yet it doesn't, because even if a fan did send in a letter wishing someone a happy birthday, since when would it get read out loud at a concert?
"We've already prepared it for you--"
"'Prepared'? As in, you wrote the fan letter?" Kamiyama interrupts.
When no answer comes, Shigeoka just says, "...Right. Fan letter. Then Happy Birthday to You!! Got it."
Home
The meeting comes to a close and everyone starts to pack up their things. Shooting a mail off to his mother letting her know that they're finished, Yuma says his goodbyes and follows 7WEST out the door.
"Really looking forward to these concerts," Kamiyama says enthusiastically. "So much to do!"
"It's different from the planning we had for our unit concert," Takemoto murmurs, swinging his bag as they walk.
Yuma thinks back to the meeting's they'd had back in November. "Staff did a lot of it for us. We got to see more today because the others were there."
"What is everyone gonna do now?" Shingaki asks, pulling out his own cellphone.
Shigeoka immediately announces that he's going over to Yuma's house and before Yuma can say anything about how they'd made no such plans, everyone else is already inviting themselves over as well. He shoots Shigeoka a dirty look, but only gets that confident grin in return.
"You missed us," is all Shigeoka says before walking ahead towards the train station and Yuma can’t quite hold back a grin, because he damned well did.
