Does Pynchon have a Mac ?

Sometimes I feel like a real asshole bringing my computer places to do work. There's this really great café a few blocks from my sister's apartment where a lot of local writers/blogger-types go to write. It's a nice environment; but I still feel weird when I walk in and instead of seeing a few heads look up to smile, I see blue glowing faces ( Read more... )

yeah I mean it's the same in any medium. music for example. think about the use of electronic equipment. not just guitars. that was a big enough deal in the 50s. but now there are bands, the prime example is probably radiohead (or at least the most accessible), who heavily rely on tape effects and all manner of electrically generated sounds. And it's sort of like Nietzsche's progression. pablo honey is a grunge album - just heavy sounding guitars and thom yorke's wail. and then jump to amnesiac or hail to the thief - a LOT of both of those were basically entirely computer generated.

and the same with film. although its maybe more obvious - lots of special effects and lots of shitty actors, rather than good actors and a comprehensible story line.

progress...it's weird huh?

It is weird. But I generally don't call it progress, since the word has some kind of positive connotation.

And although it does yield a lot of shit, I'm not completely opposed to change. I've gotten in many a begrudged tiff with Colin Woods about the music stuff & his position is pretty infuriating. His most recent shtick is to ONLY listen to audio tapes, as if it's the superior medium, and he's basically entirely opposed to anything produced after 1970. [[wacking-off gesture]]
