book review

"Little, Big" by John Crowley.  This book just made me more and more frustrated the longer I read.  It's an interesting world with lovely writing, but it's populated by 2-dimensional archetypes and no plot.  I doggedly kept reading because (A) the world was cool and (B) something had to happen, sooner or later.  Right?  About 500 pages into it, ( Read more... )

If I can save only one person from reading this book... OK, it sounds like you already saved yourself. Well done, you. ;)

My first reaction was, "Hey, I actually liked Mythago Wood!" Except now that I stop and think about it, I really liked the idea of Mythago Wood, but I kept going "Huh? That's your idea of a mythic imago?" the further into it I got. If it had gone on for 700 pages I probably wouldn't have any fond memory of it at all.

I consider myself warned. Thank you.

I wanted to like Mythago Wood so badly that I actually read several books in the series. And hated each one. :) It's been a very long time now since I read it, but my recollection is that it had the same problem of a great premise that was not followed through; with a poorly sketched protagonist and a vestigal plot.
