Today met Chuck Walsh, U.S.N.
He survived the sinking of the U.S.S. Helena on July 6, 1943, which occurred shortly after this image was taken during the battle of Kula Gulf. He was a Fireman working below deck in the boilers, which exploded after the torpedo hit. He sustained lung damage. Also said it took thirty days for him to get from Singapore ( Read more... )
