Work schedule published today, and they have me working at the Cyclorama on its final day of operations. Golly. So the Original Hermann (my dad) had a hip re-replacement Tuesday, his previously installed fake hip having developed a crack. Talked to him yesterday, and he sounded horrible -- normal, I guess, considering they've got him doped up on all sorts of painkillers. Last night, had one of those wonderful "I can get used to living down here" moments, while driving out to Hanover on Route 116. Today met Chuck Walsh, U.S.N.

He survived the sinking of the U.S.S. Helena on July 6, 1943, which occurred shortly after this image was taken during the battle of Kula Gulf. He was a Fireman working below deck in the boilers, which exploded after the torpedo hit. He sustained lung damage. Also said it took thirty days for him to get from Singapore ( Read more... )
