Embarrassment

I'm actually quite good at dealing with embarrassment, especially when I'm the self-reflexive cause. If I cause my own, then I can deal with it. Usually it involves laughing it off in public, then mentally slapping myself when I'm out of sight. It typically works fine, then I move on ( Read more... )

The thing is, that's an emotional experience you can opt out of right there, because you're not the one screwing up, and their screwing up actually doesn't reflect on you. You're just scooping that mudpie out of the air and putting it on your own face. I'm sure you've been to shows where someone screws up -- did you assume the whole cast was to blame or did you assume "Wow, those guys are screw-ups"?

You're totally right. It doesn't reflect on me, because I did my work. But I feel bad even just saying that! Theatre is supposed to be a collaborative art, you know? In my mind, I guess I keep viewing it like doubles or pairs skating; if one person doesn't pull their weight, the team is doomed. I moreso get irritated when people aren't doing their job. While it might not reflect upon me, personally, it does reflect on the production of which I am a part, so I still get mightily irked.
