Habemus papam!

Holy weirdness, Batman, we have a new pope!

Just in case you didn't know, German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger is now Pope Benedict XVI.

I'm totally wigged out by the whole new pope thing. I grew up kind of thinking that JPII always had been and would always be the pope. My head is kinda spinning.

Why do they change their names?

I honestly don't know. I think I might do a little research on that tomorrow.

John Paul II's baptismal name was Karol.

And do they have to take the name of a Saint or previous Pope?

If it were me I'd be Batman I.

No, they don't. At least, I don't think so... cause John Paul I was obviously the first John Paul (he took John from John 23rd and Paul the 6th... the two popes previous to him... but he only lived for a month after he was elected).

And I think it would be wicked cool to have Pope Batman I. It would be fun to say "Holy Pope Batman!" :)

After reading your post, I caught myself saying "Holy Pope Batman!" quite a few times today... hillarious!

At first, I thought your title read, Habemus pagan, to which I was going to reply in as deadpan a voice as you can post:

No, tappu, I think the Pope is Catholic.

I'm going to bed. It's easier for everyone that way...
