To those of you that live in or around NYC or Chicago can you please help! We are looking for family friendly neighborhoods. Not too expensive obviously, as inexpensive as we can get in a safe neighborhood. I am so scared to move back to NYC with kids. The kids that I used to see in public schools there remind me of the movie KIDS.

My friend lives in Astoria near the 31st & Broadway station and I love the neighborhood (coming from someone who is easily sketched out). Aaaand her apartment is big in Houston standards.

My SIL and her family have two kids and commute into NYC from Millburn, NJ. The town itself is a cute, stroll-able place, they have parks and really good schools, etc. I guess the train commute really isn't bad at all, either. I know; it's NEW JERSEY. But from someone that used to live in NYC and has kids now, that's really where I'd go if we had to move back now. Manhattan/Brooklyn are so, so expensive, and once you go far enough into Queens to be affordable you may as well be in another state!

I grew up/currently live in Astoria. It's a fun and safe area. Great place for singles and families. I went to public school here until the sixth grade but then my parents sent me to private school.

Bayside is another great place for families and the public schools are rated really high.
Here is a link a top rated queens public schools.
