Watching the ep last week, I knew you weren't going to be happy. You've completely changed how I see Clark.

I’d never been a fan of Superman. He was always this earnest, boring character. Our whole task with Smallville was to write the character, so that I was interested in his story. How did he become this earnest guy that is a boring do-gooder? That was the whole point of the show.

That explains so much! But did they have to make him so insecure? Where does that come from? I've never been a huge Superman fan, but part of what I found interesting in him was his uncompromising moral center. Superman/Clark learning to understand the grey areas would be a good story. Or inspiring those around him to know when relative morality is not OK. You know, something like a balance of that.

I absolutely love how Erica Durance's Lois looks at Clark. It is a beautiful thing to see.

And I so wanted to be happy! I tried to love that episode, but the Clark scenes kept making me mad. I really liked the scene between Clark and Oliver at Met Gen, where Clark took the leadership role, determined and confident, and refused to condemn Chloe without finding out the truth for himself. And then Chloe showed up, and her presence seemed to suck the hero right out of him. >:(

Tom was very pretty, and I have to give a special mention to Justin's ARMS. Yum.

I don't get the whole insecurity thing either! The stories you suggest are exactly the kind you'll find in the comics. Yes, Superman does have moments of crisis, where he doubts himself and needs Lois or his parents to remind him how important he is to the world, but they always arise out of his worst defeats, like when someone dies because he couldn't save them in time, or when he despairs that he will never be able to completely rid the world of evil. They're never about him not trying in the first place!

I absolutely love how Erica Durance's Lois looks at Clark ( ... )

Welcome back!!! It's good to hear from you again. Kudos for another incredible and beautifully written commentary. Your ability to articulate the main ills of the show yet still find what there is to celebrate has been greatly missed.

Welcome back too! You were missed in the TW fan world! :)

Great analysis. Well, there´s nothing to add except agreement. I anticipate a big disappointment at the end. Even if they started to write Clark top-notch from this week´s episode on, I am not sure if the done damage could be undone.

Th worst for me is that when I rewatch the seasons, it is such a pleasure to watch the earlier ones whereas things get more and more dreadful later. There are still good episodes in between, but the number of awful ones increases. Fortunately, I only watch my cropped versions, reduced to Tom scenes only. That makes it more bearable because I no longer have to care for the plot! lol I´m just staring at Tom! :)

Thanks! I've missed you! I count on you for your fierce loyalty to Tom and Clark, and your unerring ability to see the unvarnished truth behind the smoke screens and hype.

I'm always torn when people talk about older episodes vs. newer ones. I agree that those first seasons were in a whole different world, one whose promise and excitement will never be matched, but I also love what Tom has brought to Clark in the years since AlMiles left, so I have a completely different, but still genuine, appreciation for more recent episodes. The worst for me were S6-7, and I suspect they might have been the worst for Tom as well.

Tom-only versions! It doesn't get any better than that.

This is a great post, the scan made me "awww" and I was just posting to someone else today how Chloe reminds me of Lana and how the writers have no restraint. What's wrong with having some "normal" characters?

The thing about the wedding is so Lois and Clark. They will never have a quiet moment to plan it so they just have to get on with it best they can. Personally I think a modern L&C would live together for a while if we're being realistic but then Clark is supposed to be traditional I guess with his farm/Kansas/Kent upbringing.

Tom does look so good and will always be the best looking Superman. You don't get many men as beautiful as he is. I wish he could play him in the movie but they want to start with a clean sheet which will be interesting to see next year. Can't be any worse than Routh and Bosworth (sorry I really didn't like the Superman Returns cast).

That scan is one of my favorite Superman and Lois moments from the comics ever. I think one of the reasons I loved the scene between Clark and Lois in the barn at the end of Homecoming is because it reminded me a little of that panel.

What's wrong with having some "normal" characters?

I know! Can't we celebrate the human qualities that made these women so special to Clark? Turning them into extraordinary versions of themselves as they exit the show seems like lazy writing to me, and a bit of an insult to the characters the actresses worked so hard to develop over the years.

The thing about the wedding is so Lois and Clark. They will never have a quiet moment to plan it so they just have to get on with it best they can.I have to admit, you make a very good point. There will always be another crisis, another villain, and another big story ( ... )

I would agree I am looking forward to the last episodes of Smallville more than a new film especially after the disappointment of Superman Returns. But also because after a decade of watching a show you naturally become a lot more attached to the actors/characters than you do in a two hour film.
