Smallville: Ten things I loved about Masquerade

Feb 24, 2011 07:35

This is impossibly late and not much more than a picspam, but it's the closest thing to a review I've written in over three months, so I'm posting it anyway. :)

Although there was way too much Chlollie for my taste, this episode was really a fresh breeze concerning the writing of Clark (and Clois). Why is it so difficult to understand for the other writers that this is how we want Clark portrayed in this final season? And we deserve it after 9 years of self-doubt and insecurity.

The Fortune clips look hilarious, even though the episode looks like a waste this late in the season. The most I look forward to are the glimpses of real Tom having fun. Because there is no way that Clark is a "check it out, check it out" type of guy... :))

Oh, and Ollie usually does nothing for me, but in this scene when he is in drag is kinda sexy (and I´m NOT into drag queens at all, as you all know what guy I´m into... lol)

The writing in this episode was on a whole different level, and I have to believe the actors appreciated it as much as we did. BP did say that when Clark entered the final phase of his journey, his insecurity would be gone (after Collateral and Beacon I wrote that quote off as the usual crazy talk), so I'm hoping the characterization we saw in Masquerade is here to stay. There are so few episodes left, and I want Clark to be awesome in all of them.

There was way too much Chlollie for me as well, but I suppose it's to be expected during Chloe's exit arc. I hope her last episode is as fun as it looks.

I think you're right about us getting a glimpse of the real Tom. :) I'm happy to have one more chance to see him use his gift for comedy. And who knew Justin could look so good in eyeshadow? With Supernatural, I'm getting two hours of hot guys being funny this week. I am so in.

I didn't click on any of the clips (I'm a bit anal when it comes to remaining unspoiled, heh) but it seems like---wacky hijinks? Could be fun, but what I'm really curious about is whether we really need a light, fluffy ep at this point in the series? This last ep just truly kickstarted the Darkseid storyline - wouldn't it have been better to up that a notch this week too? Or revisit the Alexander twist from 'Beacon?' I suppose we'll soon find out though.

Great post. :-) I agree with everything and I'd add Bert, the Clark fanboy in there somewhere too, heh.

BQM really was MVP. To my mind he's only really written one weak script - 'Echo.' 'Committed' and 'Hex' are amongst my all time favorites, and 'Bulletproof' was easily the best from amongst the Lana arc. He's also written 'Warrior', I believe? Which I loved. And 'Luthor' was definitely one of the better eps this season. Is there any chance of him writing the finale?

Yikes, I'm so sorry about spoiling you! Even the single frames you see without clicking on the vids can spill a lot, and I didn't think about that. :( I'm looking forward to Fortune because I can't resist the lure of Tom doing comedy. There are other reasons as well, but I don't want to spoil you any more than I already have!

Bert was too funny, and so smitten! :) Smallville really has a knack for giving us memorable characters, and actors who make the most of small roles.

I've enjoyed every one of BQM's episodes (I do agree that Echo had its problems), and I count most of them among my favorites. I wish he were writing the finale, but I can't imagine B&K handing that script off to someone else.

\o/ This post is made of awesome and filled with so much pretty that I can't stand it.

I loved the twist at the end but I have to admit I was totally surprised for that one. I thought Chloe was a goner for a second or something but not that.

I've not seen the new previews yet as I am running behind on everything but I'm trying to catch up. (Which I owe you an email, too.) But for now I'll just stay right here in your post and lust until someone makes me move. :p

Thanks again for sharing the pretties. ♥

Didn't Tom look amazing in this episode?! I love him in the glasses.

I wondered why Desaad had that big grin on his face when Clark pulled Oliver off of him, and in retrospect it makes perfect sense for Ollie to turn, but I was surprised, too, when the symbol showed up. I'm very interested to see where they go with this.

All the thanks for the pretties belong to Home of the Nutty. Janine makes the best caps!

I hope your grandmother is doing better! *hugs*

This is the most brilliant review. I already loved the episode to a million pieces (and I personally love BQM's scripts and throw a hand up to the haters) but reading reviews like this helps push Masquerade further up on my list of all time favorite episodes.

As far as dialogue, i love all the ones you put but my FAVORITE (besides "It's my power...") was Lois' "I won't bother with the Chinese because I would just sound racist". I didn't hear it the first time, but the second time I was rolling.

Awww, thanks! I just keep watching all the scenes with Clark and/or Lois in them, over and over, because I can't get enough of them. I love BQM, for both Smallville and Batgirl. I wonder if he'll move on to another show when Smallville is over, or do something else entirely.

"I won't bother with the Chinese because I would just sound racist"

LOL! That was great, especially Erica's delivery. I also liked Clark's line in the loft scene: "I feel like I can't believe that you did this to my jacket." :) I'll bet they had a lot of fun filming this one.

The Chinese line was a direct reference to Rush Limbaugh's most recent dumbass comments and Chinese mimicking, right? That's the first thing I thought of, and I LOVED that they referenced it.

Okay, I googled "Limbaugh chinese" because I had no idea what you were talking about, and now I think that line is falling-down funny. Go, Smallville!

I could just hug this episode and hug this review. I loved it, loved it, loved it! Well, I loved the Clark parts of it. I tolerated the Chollie parts. But the Clark/Lois stuff was like chicken soup for the soul ( ... )

I loved it so hard.

Me, too. Or at least, just like you, the Clark/Lois parts. :)

Clark is not someone who has to try to stand out. He has the opposite problem. It's virtually impossible NOT to notice him. He stops traffic in both his appearance and his actions.

This is so true (of both Clark and Tom, I have to say), and I've always appreciated the rare moments when the show has acknowledged it. I also like how Clark's disguise gives Lois a whole new, delicious secret to keep: how incredibly HOT her husband is. It was exciting to see Clark take such a big big step this week, and I can't wait to see what comes next.

I love how Clark taking on the mild mannered facade also leads right into one of the other "problems" that Lois and Clark have in the future in terms of the public's scrutiny over Lois's relationship with Superman. I always feel like it's very realistic when the comics make you aware that the public does recognize that there is something....too intimate....about Superman's relationship with Lois Lane. Yet, Lois is a married woman and she's married to this very sweet, successful guy ( ... )

I think it's interesting when they touch on this in the comics, and I agree, it is realistic. And if anyone does imply that something inappropriate is going on between them, I like how people rush to defend the relationship, and Superman himself, because they know he would never do anything untoward.

I've never read the ruin arc, but your description just inspired me to go buy all three TPBs on eBay. :) Thanks for the rec!
