Perhaps I've just been reading too much about racism...

...but when I saw Sherlock Holmes last night (although I still enjoyed the movie) I found myself kind of offended how there was lots of Hebrew in the movie, all connected with black magic and secret societies controlling government and sexual rituals. Am I just being overly sensitive? Or is it a fair enough statement that the movie made rather ( Read more... )

I think it's a fair call. I sometimes read books or see TV shows in which the male characters (or even just the author, blatantly) refer to all women as being in on some secret evil conspiracy, or refer to them as "alien creatures", and to me that's rather offensive even in the context of a joke. I don't see why the principle would be any different in regards to race or religion.

I could be wrong, but a lot of actual occultist organisations appropriated Hebrew, I believe.

Yeah, I guess, but they also used Latin, didn't they?

I guess...seeing not just Hebrew words but whole pages of writing surrounding images of goats heads and pentagrams, back to back sphinxes who I originally thought were supposed to represent the cherubim on the Ark of the Covenant, and the use of words such as 'Tzedek' which means righteousness and the four faces mentioned in Ezekiel...creeped me out a bit. It wasn't just the fact they used Hebrew.

From what I can gather, it was based on the Masons, who in turn based their practices on bastardised Jewish language and traditions.

Really? Oh...wasn't there something about the masons saying they built Solomon's Temple?

Damn, now I want a secret Jewish handshake!

I didn't actually notice it at all, but once it's out on dvd I will re-watch and see what I see. You've never struck me as the type to overreact to things. Not being Jewish myself, I'm less likely to pick up on such things. Basically, if you were offended then I think in all likelihood there was one or more aspects of the movie which were actually offensive.

See above for what bothered me. It wasn't offensive (THAT UPSETS ME, YOU A RUDE PERSON) so much as "Hey! That's from my religion. Waitasec....what does that mean they're saying about my religion? ...Didn't that sort of thing get Jews killed back in the day? ...and now also, come to think of it..." o_O
