Route 66 Suggestions??

My sisters and I are going to be taking a road trip along the whole breadth of Route 66 - from Chicago to Santa Monica the second week of July.  I'm still working on the details, and I thought maybe some of you out there could help me!  Anyone done a stretch on Route 66?  Thoughts?  Suggestions?  Pitfalls to avoid?  Sites not to miss?  I'd love any

AAA has, if i remember correctly, a really awesome rte 66 guidebook

For starters, head to www.route66guidebooks.com to check out the guidebooks. Don't pick one, but pick several. Trust me, you'll need them. 66 is not officially on the maps anymore, but over 85% is still driveable, and that's probably closer to 90-95
