Apartment Hunting

Jun 08, 2008 23:03

My friend Laura is officially moving with me to California, which is wonderful news.  Now we just need to find a place to live.  We're looking for a 2-bedroom in the Santa Monica area.  Our max is $2200 but ideally we'd stay around $2000.  If you hear about something please pass it along!!!  :)

Check with Rob to see if there's an opening in their building. Last I hear the 2 bedrooms were going for $1400.

There might not be one open, but if you can get it, the place rocks. The Landlord is just awesome. We never would have moved if it wasn't for the job in SD.

I work in Santa Monica and many of the people in my office live there, so I'll indeed keep an eye out.

$2200? A month? Thats 40% more than my mortgage, property tax, and HOA combined, and it isn't like I live in podunk Arkansas or anything. You could buy a $300000 condo for that. I certainly hope you can do better for a 2 bedroom rental.

Not in southern California's cities, especially on the coast.

Now I will note that you can probably get a quite tolerable place in Santa Monica for $1600/mo. Our buddy Baron is paying $2200 to move into a really upscale space in Marina del Rey (admittedly, 1 BR with some ridiculous amenities).

Hate to rain on your parade, but I live in San Diego, less than 5 miles from some of the best beaches in the world.

I grew up in San Diego. It's turned into a real shithole since the city decided to become a copy of L.A.

May I recommend considering other parts of LA? Unless you NEED to be by the beach, or have a job on the westside, there are other places in Los Angeles County that are worth living in. I live in Northeast Los Angeles, four miles from Downtown. I have easy, quick access to the 2, 5, 134, and 10 freeways, from which I can head north, south, east, or west pretty quickly. I have Farmer's Markets within 5 miles of me on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Highland Park is full of art galleries and studios. The Gold Line gets me downtown without paying for parking. My commute is only 8 miles, counting the mile to get me down the hill.

Overall, I find NELA to be an overlooked and underpriced part of town, worth looking into. As long as you are aware of your surroundings and don't end up near the Avenues (or other) Gang guys, you should be fine.
