Even seeing what you absolutely never want to do can be valuable (if frustrating).

That professor sounds cool, but then again I tend to get along with the psychodynamic crowd. The field is huge, and I get the sense that part of internship is figuring out where you want to work and who you want to work with.

It sounds to me as though some of your colleagues are going into the wrong profession. I think your mother's advice is sound. You might also find some solace in Wayne Allred's provocative and influential text, How to Cope When You Are Surrounded by Idiots.
