Sam opened the door fully dressed. He didn’t seem as surprised to see Ray standing there as Ray had expected him to. It was certainly a surprise to Ray. Stepping back, Sam watched Ray expectantly.

“D’you want a drink?” Sam asked, gesturing the already open scotch bottle upon his table. Ray deliberated the offer,

I'm not that sh...okay, I AM that shallow XD, but I liked it even though it ended up Gene/Sam, because all the characterization on the way was fab, and I could see it all happening. You had the voices spot on and the confusion was perfect. xx

There is absolutely nothing rubbish about this. It's great and I love Sam being the aggressor and Ray being confused and angry. And Sam still gets Gene in the end. Result!

Loved the idea that Gene's been pining for some time (those mistakes you mentioned?) but it takes Sam going off with Ray to get him to act.
