Salem State also has a monthly payment system if the financial aid thing doesn't work out...that's how I survived. Unless you take night classes and you have to pay up front...then I got nothing.
Buy the car from your mechanic. Do not have the work done on it.
Drive your current car. If your car ends up working out fine in the summer traffic, sell your mechanic's car and go to school. (essentially you have taken option B at this point, but with a security net.) If it fails, transfer the struts to the car you bought at that point, and drive it. (Essentially you have taken option A at this point, but gotten more use out of the old car.)
