It's German renaissance. Look up painting by Lucas Cranach for ideas.

I love this idea! I think it is a German 16th century gown, like from that one artist, Cranach. (I guess that's another reason it's totally inaccurate - totally wrong country!) Jen Thompson did a version of the Grey Lady a little while ago (the only reason I remember this!), but I'm not sure exactly when. It's an awesome costume!

LOL. I love how they went all in with their inaccuracy. It is very freeing!

I know! The ironic thing for you is that I think the bands of trim are *supposed* to be velvet, unlike the floral stuff they've got!

It's 16th c. Saxon. There are even some patterns out there for these types of gowns if you want a cheat. I know Reconstructing History and Past Patterns both make them, but I have no clue if they are good or not. Here are some helpful online tutorials: http://germanrenaissance.net/free-patterns-for-16th-century-german-renaissance-clothing-and-accessories/

I'll be wearing my repro of this dress on Friday at CoCo this year - several of us are doing a Harry Potter theme. We could be dueling Grey Ladies! ;)

Thank you so much- this is really helpful! I'll probably be wearing mine to the gala since this may be the only new thing I wear :)

Jen's is amazing - I have to link hers to my page, which isn't 100% up to date. But lots of pics and other stuff: http://costumersguide.com/harrypotter2.shtml
