Okay, I finally got it up and loaded and here it is: Teague kicking ass at USDAA mid December. It's so wonderful when things really click.

We have ANOTHER usdaa trial coming up a 2 weekends. It's been nice not going to the currently running AKC trials, 1. because they are bitter cold, and 2. a change of people :) - though I have to say USDAA was ( Read more... )

I agree, and great thoughts. I don't think people are intentionally getting their dogs to bark, i think it feeds off itself. Loud gets louder. I absolutely don't want people shutting wn their dogs.

That was a BEAUTIFUL run! I couldn't see a spot where Teague didn't know where he going next. Gorgeous!

As for barking, barking, barking (when not in the ring - I am ok with barking in the ring when running): I am not a fan. Dogs can be excited without continuously barking with some training early on. It would be like a parent allowing a child to scream at the top of their lungs if the kid is happy/excited. It is annoying, no matter the species. Put a sock (or a ball) in it. [My, my, I'm judgmental today. Sort of sorry, but not.]

When Teague was younger he went nuts when other dogs ran, nd my prior really crazy girl, rocket, it took 2 months to even get to the side of the practice site because she screamed and thre herself widely about at the sight of other dogs moving. It took 2 months to get to the arena side because I only moved forward when she got a grip and could pay attention to me. It's more than most people would do. Now, both were/are BCs and I was able to translate insanity into tug. I did, in essence, put a tug in it. I do think it's harder w some dogs, I recognize that.

I understand that some dogs have a harder time containing their enthusiasm, and I appreciate the work that some people, such as yourself, go through to keep it in check. I think many competitors are primarily concerned about what will help their dogs and their runs, and the people or dogs that may be adversely impacted by the behavior should just accept it or go elsewhere. I have already been told multiple times, sometimes directly, that if I don't like it, I should just go elsewhere -- somewhere that caters to the quieter or not-as-flashy dogs. That hurt so badly.

Yeah, that is SUCKY behavior on people's parts. S
Being considerate is everyone's job. There are very competitive handlers wo are amazingly considerate of others and then there are folks, at all levels, that are horribly rude. I think recognizing that it's not peoples solo playground is really important. And Gordons not flashy? Ha!

Dogs bark, some dogs bark when they're having fun, agility is supposed to be fun with dogs. So, hey - bark on, agility is where my dogs get to be dogs.

Now, dogs left barking continuously in their crates or dogs that bark and lunge at every dog that walks by - that barking drives me nuts. But dogs just having a good time? Doesn't bother me in the least. Obviously. ;-)

I agree about the crates .. if they're going to bark in the crates, they should be outside in the car. It's not good for the dog or everyone around.

I try and be casual, about it cause I know the dogs are having fun, or being frantic, in some cases. I think it was the sheer numbers. It wasn't like anyone could move away from the one dog having fun... It was intense.

As for the crate barking, yeah. AND I have a dog that if he sees others running will scream. So I cover him w a sheet. I hate dogs screaming in their crates and lunging about and the humans doing nothing. I had someone like that at this trial, and it was no fun having to walk by them. I hated it and it freaked Flyte.

This is long and I apologize as I'm on a bit of an emotional roller-coaster with the horse, so hopefully this all comes out as I intended ( ... )

It's amazing what a little apology or acknowledgement about your space does! Fixes everything, easy peasy. I just have a hard time feeling sorry for barking or super tugging when a person who only feeds their dog sits in the middle of everyone's way completely oblivious. Okay, off soapbox ;)

Yep, I love the calming exercises. I work it all - calming t-touch type exercises, tricks, tugging, distance from the arena. I really try to be aware if the dogs in the arena are really sensitive to him, but I'm not always good at catching it. I do try though! If his bark wasn't so high pitched, gah! I guess there is always duct tape ...

Oh and I started putting him on a head halter - I love it! Works wonderous. Hopefully AKC won't be too anal about it...

I have to second a lot of this. Some dogs are just Talkers! (or yellers, sometimes). To remove that is to fundamentally remove something the dog IS...

PS: I think I mentioned it on FB, but if not, this run shows all the talent between you and Teague. Truly a thing of beauty.
