Golden Compass thingie. From what I've seen on the sites and such it looks like a cool movie. Several friends have recommended the books, so I think I have something lined up for when I finish Kushiel's Dart.
Speaking of books, have you or any of your minions read Anne Bishop's series that starts with "Sebastian"? I'm 100 pages in and sorely disappointed so far. If anyone could assure me that it gets better, I'd be much more willing to finish it.
I have not read it and I don't think I intend to. I've come to the realization that Anne Bishop is actually a fairly terrible writer and she was alright for me in high school, but no more. Quit with that and read Kushiel's Dart! It's kinda similar, but with more political intrigue and infinitely better written. More characters than you can shake a stick at though. The religion in the story is also facinating. It's pretty sexy at parts too but it's not stupidly predictable like a romance novel. You should try it! Much higher quality romantic dark fantasy than Anne Bishop will ever write, the way she's going.
Sometimes I am amazed at the kind of writing I liked to read in high school, and how poor I would consider it now. However, even though I'm saying this knowing that I haven't read the Golden Compass series since high school, if you haven't read the Golden Compass books yet you are in for a gynormous treat.
It is rather bewildering, isn't it? Even more bewildering is when your peers don't grow out of it like you do. In any case, I just ordered the 3-book set off Amazon and it should arrive before the long drive home. I can't read in the car because I get carsick, but at least I'll have something to do at the hotels at night.
It's not. It was the best thing since sliced bread when I was a high school freshman though. And even then I recognized the flaws, but just ignored them. Can't do that anymore! I start gritting my teeth going, "Stop. Repeating. The. Same. Descriptive. Phrase. Over and over and OVER!!! GRAAAAAHHH!!!" And, "Every one of your main characters is the same damn person, just each is a different mood of him/her. Congradulations." Yesh, I do believe a Well-Written Fantasy Con is in order. Just as a warning though - you may find the sex a bit too much to take in the Kushiel books.
