A little bit about my situation. Two years back I posted here asking for help about trying to get a job relevant in my field. Due to financial circumstances beyond my control I've had to suck it up and take a job at JCPenney as an opener. I've managed to keep the job some 9+ months, but I've been unable to save up any money and I break even on ( Read more... )

Have you thought about teaching at a high school level for creative writing?

Of course. Problem is I don't have the qualifications, and trying to get into a special program like the Teaching Fellows to set you up for teaching here in New York is almost impossible these days; they're so selective and as a matter of fact they don't even have openings for people who want to be English teachers.

What looks really interesting to me is to go back to grad school for creative writing so I could teach in college. But that's looking just as selective and I might as well finish my book first before even applying.

Despairing over the usefulness of your degree is understandable, especially in this terrible job market. However, I don't think it's useless - you just need opportunities to use it more, since you obviously love to write. Until you're in a position to leave your retail job, hopefully because you're off to do better things, stick with it so you can survive as you put together a plan. Hang in there ( ... )

I agree with the above. Also, people are always looking for freelance writers over at Elance.com

I live in New York and my WIP is a slightly self-aware interstices novel that's romance, sci-fi fantasy, and adventure epic in one. While I do have influences from more "literary" fiction (mostly in the prose) it's still not a high-brow novel when all's said and done. I'm scared it'll come off as a juvenile and self-absorbed kitsch to the grants I'm applying for. I hope it does all count on the way I spin it, as you say, but I refuse to think my baby is bad just because grant writers won't to help me pay for myself as I write it ( ... )
