Rant on Jobs

I've held temporary/contract jobs so many times that I've lost track.  It started 20 years ago.  In between there have been permanent jobs, and I've enjoyed those.  Although, in my experience none of them have been truly "permanent" -- because the employer always said that an employee could be let go at a moment's notice, for any reason.  I've ( Read more... )

It's possible that they give all applicants these tests. Picking and choosing who does and does not take them could appear discriminatory. Try not to take it personally. I'm sure you're more than qualified.

I appreciate your comment. :-) I can see how an employer would not want to appear discriminatory, yet... it's hard not to take it personally. I take pride in a job well done. Thank you for the kind words.

I'm always thrilled when I'm asked to take a test. To me it means that they will be looking at my provable skills, rather than hiring based on who has a connection in the office already or according to what school candidates went to, or what degrees they have.

I appreciate your comment. :-) It's always satisfying when an employer recognizes what skills you have, and offers you a way to contribute that is meaningful.

Status of Job Search with multiple periods of temp/contract employment over 20 years? ext_2840875 October 27 2014, 07:20:28 UTC
I am new to LiveJournal and found your posting interesting because I too started to take various temp positions after being in a bad accident in 2007. It seems as if prospective employers view you as a flight risk due to the lack of long term employment with one company vs. seeing you as extremely adaptable. So, I was curious to know where you ended up and how long it took you to find acceptable employment?

Hello! I think you're correct in saying employers view me as a flight risk (generally). Once in a while I've encountered employers who understand adaptability, and that's been great. I've tried being an independent contractor, too. I've had to move around to different regions of the U.S. since childhood -- hopefully this time I can stay put. My husband finds it easy to get a job, cause everyone wants his skills. In this region, I've worked as an English tutor, and volunteered with rescue cats. Still can't say I've found "acceptable employment" but that's ok. Sorry I didn't really answer your questions. Perhaps next year will be better! :-)
