Author's Note: Nothing really new here yet. This is the first chapter of a projected series; I originally posted it
on ff.net well over a year ago, before I had an LJ. I'm reposting this now because Merry would not let me be; chapter two (brand-new!) is going up tomorrow, and, erm, there is absolutely no way in hell it will be understandable

I'm so glad you didn't have Tom caper and sing. Thank you for that too. :)

I'm glad you like the fic so far! Part II is already up, though, erm, part III won't be along for a bit. It's been a long time since I worked with this one, but Merry and the poor imprisoned king just would not leave me alone.

I somehow had not read this one before. You write one creepy fog, m'lady. Dang, now I wish they'd filmed that.

Wow - what an intriguing premise! I particularly enjoy your characterization of Merry, and the interweaving of dialogue from the text.
I'm eagerly looking forward to the second installment - unfortunately it looks like I'll have to work at work this afternoon, so it will have to wait until I get home.
One nitpicky thing, though. And if it annoys you to have this pointed out, please feel free to ignore it :-) You mention Frodo clutching at his chest, but the ring wasn't put on a chain around his neck until Rivendell. Before that, it was kept in his pocket on a chain attached to his belt - the way Bilbo wore it. I realize this is an AU, just wasn't sure how close you had wanted to stay to canon for details like that.

And ooooh, excellent point about Frodo clutching at his chest, which I didn't catch at all! Please please PLEASE feel free to make such points in comments, and if I decide to change the fic based on your comment of course I will thank you profusely (or any other commenter) in the author's notes. :) I kinda like Frodo clutching at his chest in this moment, and must confess that I probably made this mistake because the gesture is just so damn hot. As you say, though, it's not canon, so I may very well tinker with it if I can possibly overcome my inner it's-so-damn-hot whimpering about the matter ( ... )

I agree, and that made me a bit hesitant to mention it. After all, clutching at his pocket just doesn't have the same impact. :-)
And I definitely agree about the appeal of PJ's more active ring-as-character. I recently re-watched FotR, and some of my favorite bits remain those little ring moments. Like when the ring is on Bilbo's doorstep and Gandalf stoops to touch it, and the camera is actually the ring's POV. I loved that.
