Mar 04, 2010 21:08

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/md_d0 688G 605G 49G 93% /media/work
/dev/md_d1 917G 870G 908M 100% /media/home
/dev/md_d2 1.8T 196M 1.7T 1% /media/raid

This is the addition of a much-needed new RAID-1 array to my desktop workstation.

Wait ... what are the three columns showing data sizes there? Total, used and free? If so, why don't columns 2 and 3 add up to 1?

Corrected to include header. And, yep, I guess they don't actually add up, and I'm not totally sure why. Maybe they're like government statistics.

I pay less attention to the first two numbers anyways.

They don't add up because of the reserved space on the filesystem.

I thought the reserved space was one of the reasons that the 2 trillion byte hard drive shows up as 1.8TB. The other, of course being that 1024^4 != 1e+12.

Ahhh, yes, I see now!

The 1.8T is effectively 2e+12 bytes, so that's the bulk of the reason why the total is not what I bought. But the "leftover" space (917-871)/917 is the 5% reserved.

Thanks!
