Well, I got to do some handiwork with my main desktop! Yesterday I moved one of the two RAID drives into the case (it had been sitting on top, on a mouse pad, and it seemed to get really warm up there). Now it's settled in a 5 1/4" bay with a HD fan attached to it. Much cooler!
Plus, I did some more work with my SSE2-enabled code. I now have a single C program that computes a 100M-long dot product using several methods: x87, SSE, Atlas/BLAS, and CUDA in single-threaded mode, and x87, SSE, and Atlas in multithreaded mode. The fastest it runs is 3.7 GFLOP/s, which is really only an indicator of how fast my memory transfers are: 14 GB/sec.
And I read the two articles (one was the Bruce Sterling one about the new materialsm).
