Love!

A good while back I wrote up a post where I justifiably claimed that you could learn everything you'd ever need to know about a person based on their favorite Beatles album.  The poll included in the post seemed to fare pretty well, so I thought id write up another.

Now, many would argue against this, but I tend to think that the modern romantic ( Read more... )

I think mine is in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." Are one of these movies that I haven't seen like that?

isn't that movie about a failed relationship he was trying to forget? Doesn't really sound like it fits the theme... unless you are trying to express some kind of materialism regarding the transient nature of love. In that case, Conan the Barbarian is definitely your movie.

What I get from ESotSM is "relationships can have problems and you can fight and be really mad, but if you can get past your problems and give them another chance they can still work and you can recapture the magic."

Of the movies I've seen, Natural Born Killers is closest, although it's a very different movie...

I guess what I was saying was that eternal sunshine seemed to be more the model of a breakup/recovery.... the relationship itself was pretty trivial... all that was shown was fleeting moments of random cuteness followed by increasing disinterest. Unless she was trying to say that she believes that all relationships are basically fleeting moments of random cuteness followed by increasing disinterest, in which case she actually makes a good point. I suppose the movie did bring up some philosophical topics regarding memory and the biochemical nature of affection.

i hate polls like this, 'cause inevitably, i'm not familiar with half of them, and picking the closest one of the ones i know isn't a good solution. instead, you should summarize your take on the relationships in each movie, so i can go by that description instead of just a title of a movie i've never seen. or i could just take my toys and go home.

well, which ones are you not familiar with? I will attempt to summarize.. or alternatively you can describe the relationship and I will pick, and then you can verify. I'm surprised people are saying they haven't seen a lot of these... I tried to keep it purposefully mainstream.

well, even of the ones i've seen, i'm not sure i remember enough about the relationships to make a call on it. from what i remember, i can say that i'm definitely not sid & nancy, misery, the graduate, or the princess bride.

if you are into young adult boys having open-minded, heartfelt, coming of age yet creepily sexual relationships with really old ladies, go with harold and maude.

if you are into realistic, honest portrayals of modern romance and relationships, go with annie hall.

if you are into manly grunting and cleaving of enemies in twain in defense of a warrior goddess, go with conan. Or natural born killers. Both work, in a weird sort of way.

if you are into cute old-fashioned gentlemanly romance (with audrey hepburn), go with roman holiday.

if you are into nihilistic fornication and infidelity, as well as the use of hats as sex toys, go with unbearable lightness.

if you think love conquers all, by way of a incredible shaft of light erupting from the mouth of milla jovovich, go with fifth element.

if you are stuck somewhere in the middle of all of these, go with true romance. you cant go wrong with true romance.

My interpretation of Lost In Translation: love is as much about being in the same place in life as being "kindred spirits" or what have you. I don't believe in soulmates; I believe in time invested in each other.

Also, I identify with Bill Murray, and would love to do Scarlette Johansen even though I'm old.

None of these movies came all that close to my ideal. I ended up choosing Natural Born Killers, because I think it's important for couples to share each other's interests.

Conan was a close second.... because she wore fuzzy leather britches.

Actually... on second thought... I should have said Harold and Maude... that IS close to my ideal... I just couldn't get around my mental image of porking Ruth Gordon.

Also on your list should have been "When Harry Met Sally."

I thought about adding when harry met sally, but it seemed too close to annie hall, and annie hall was a much better movie.

And I dont know what your problem is... I have no problem at all picturing you porking ruth gordon.

It's been SO LONG since I saw annie hall, I have no memories of it.

> I have no problem at all picturing you porking ruth gordon.

I have a much easier time imagining You and Ruth... her gnarled-yet-firm fingers clawing into your mutton chops, as she uses your short hairs to drag your face closer and closer to the apex of her sex... and you are faced with a difficult choice... "Which wrinkle is the right one?"

I would have chosen When Harry Met Sally... first, I haven't seen Annie Hall (not a big Woody fan).

I also think it would be a good idea to add a short description along with the movies of what sort of relationship it is that you're describing. I agree that some of these movies I haven't seen and some I've seen but don't remember exactly what the relationships were like in them. The only reason I picked About a Boy was because the first thing that sprang into mind when I was reading your entry was High Fidelity (I guess I figured that one Nick Hornby movie is close enough to another right?). Barring that I would have picked True Romance.

Well, I think you should have gone with Say Anything. High Fidelity and About a Boy really have nothing at all in common with each other, given that About a Boy was a great movie and High Fidelity sucked ass. So by my thinking, Say Anything is really the movie for you, since John Cusack is really the exact same in every movie he is in.

Though yeah... True Romance was good.

True, Cusak is pretty much the same in every movie that he's in (even if the movies itself are slightly different). Honestly I haven't seen About a Boy so I can't really speak much of it. But Say Anything is basically the same thing as Princess Bride isn't it? I mean, doing whatever it takes for love? In that case I suppose that True Romance really is the best choice, it's been forever since I've seen it but I remember it being awesome.
