Ezra Brooks isn't a very good bourbon. It has a heavy enough body and some nice oaky tones, it's a respectable 90 proof, but the shit is a tongue burner, which hoses the whole thing. Good bourbon doesn't burn until you swallow it. It burns your throat and belly, not your tongue. When bourbon burns your tongue, it hoses the flavor. You get the wood ( Read more... )

I'm a big fan of Knob Creek, Baker's, Woodford Reserve, Wild Turkey 101, and Russel's Reserve. Rare Breed and Booker's are a bit too full bodied for my taste, and Basil Hayden's is a bit too light bodied, but those are pretty good if you're into that sort of thing.

I completely understand what you're saying. If a bourbon (or any whiskey or whiskey-derived alcohol) burns anything above my lower esophagous, it's not a truly fine drink. That's one of the reasons I geek out so much about Patron Anejo (tequila) and Tito's (a very fine vodka made in Austin). They're just so tasty and pleasurable without feeling like you could use them to clean the rotor of a Black Hawk. Although, Tito's doesn't have quite the same price tag that Patron does, which makes it even better.

I also like Hennessy (sp?)

Tito's is great. Top shelf vodka for the price of Smirnoff. Definitely my vodka of choice. Haven't tried Patron Anejo, because I've never liked tequila, and I just can't justify spending $50 on an experiment. I've tried Hennessy and didn't like it, but that's just because I don't really dig cognac.
