I am now Uncle Telemachus73, as my brother Lance and his wife Michelle had their first child, Ronald Jackson, on Friday, June 2. Pictures can be found on my brother's blog

I noticed that they named him and called him, already, by his middle name. That stuff amuses me. Why not just name him Jackson Ronald if you're going to call him Jackson? But, you know, whatever. Hooray for birth!
So why not call him Ronald? Grampy doesn't deserve that? I'm not criticizing, though, I just think it's odd that so many people do that. If I had a kid and named it after a family member, I'd use the name. To me, that's the better compliment. In high school I actually wrote an essay on names, nicknames, and the progression of various nicknames throughout life. It's not an hours-of-pondering-worth topic for me, but I do find it somewhat interesting.

The short answer is family politics. Basically Lance wanted to continue a tradition of using the name Ronald J. (with the middle name being anything that starts with J) while Michelle didn't like the name Ronald. However, she did like the name Jackson, so they compromised by naming him Ronald Jackson with the agreement that he would be known as Jackson.
An earlier attempt at compromise was discussed on my blog two years ago, that being the option of naming him Ronald Joseph but nicknaming him Jackson, which I thought was brilliant but Michelle thought was completely bizarre. http://www.telemachus.us/3qlance.html
