I took pictures in the Sistine Chapel, which is apparently a cardinal sin listed in the Book of WTF.
They had a sign posted outside that had a circle-slash with a little flashing camera, so I naturally thought, "No flash photography. Sure, makes sense." But apparently that meant no pictures at all, because after I took a few, one of the guards grabbed me by the shoulder and shouted at me to get out.
I really wish they had a little area to perform spot excommunications on the way out, but I didn't see one. The exit dumped me out from the Vatican into Rome, so I actually got kicked out of the country.
I was pretty shocked when it happened, but a few minutes later, I was laughing at how appropriate it was. :)
That's total bullcrap. When i was there there were tons of people taking pictures. Though you aren't really supposed to.
Were you weearing shorts? did your t-shirt say anything? were you speaking in an higher tone above a whisper? There must have been something aside from picture taking that made them throw you out and the picture taking was just a good excuse.
Of course the guards could have been having an "i'm going to be an asshole" day...
I tried taking a picture discreetly, and the one photo I managed to sneak came out blurry. So sad.
I got kicked out of the Sistine Chapel, but only because I lost track of time meandering through the museums and didn't realize that it was closing time. So, so sad.

Were you burning when sunlight hit you, or something, so they decided they didn't want "your kind" around?

Still, I got probably a good dozen pictures before they grabbed me, and I wasn't being subtle about it.
