replacing contact table...

Two nights ago I came home from work to find a man trying to break into my house through a window. He ran off as soon as I pulled into the driveway, but I was paranoid he might be hiding waiting to rob me or something. So I drove around to a gas station, where there is quite often a cop, to ask if he'd escort me to my door, but there was no cop, ( Read more... )

No need to worry. Burglary is a crime of stealth. They dont want to see you or make contact with you. The moment you see them, whether you're a buff guy or an old lady, they bolt. They dont like to be around for more than 5 minutes because they really dont want to get caught. Its weird that it was at night, i know night time burglary is the cliche, but its not the standard. Usually if its at night it means their drunk, high, or really stupid. Generally most burglaries happen between 9-11am, and 1-3pm, or something like that, while most people are at work.

Well I work at night. My thinking was that it was some crackhead who saw there were no cars in the driveway and thought he'd give it a shot. I basically had the same thinking as you about it. I figured he probably took off and wasn't coming back. He ran off quite fast. I'm just glad he didn't make it inside. If I had caught him inside I may have been in some danger. Who knows.

Well i'm just regurgitating what i've learned in my criminal justice classes, but generally burglars do what they do so that they can enjoy a comfortable lifestyle with lots of money and getting caught is the last thing they want. So if you had caught him inside i'm more than averagely certain he still would have bolted. I had to read an entire book about it and one burglar said that he broke in and he saw an old lady asleep in a chair in front of a TV so he had to leave. They also mostly said that he only reason they'd ever do it at night was if they knew for a fact that no one was home or if they were just trashed or high or out of their minds. Theres a lot of cliches about burglary, and one of them is that they're all these master thieves, which isn't true at all. In the book i read the burglars listed things that would keep them away from a home along with researchers taking them out in a car and having the burglars telling them what houses they would perfer to break into, and one of the thing that universially kept them away was ( ... )

Well thanks for all the info.
The window he tried to get in through was in the car port where i had no light on. I also live in a neighborhood that sits on an almost perfect grid, and right next the the intersection of two major roads. I also live in crackville, Pensacola. So there you go. I've since turned all the outside lights on.
