When I read, "preferred to associate with high achievers, but seemed to form the closest friendships with people who were intellectual, genuine, compassionate/idealist types and those with 'interesting' personalities," I kinda had to step back. My dad has barely known me for most of my life since I lived with my mom and he moved across the country when I turned 14... yet he knew my choice in friends better than I do. I don't know if I could give a more accurate description of the people I like i.e. you.
