This is aimed at Terri, but someone else who reads might be able to help, so I'm making it public.

I have a domain kiting problem (oh that header bar; Bob Parsons sure knows how to make himself look like a twat). My chances of grabbing the domain back by regular human methods are slim, so my options are ( Read more... )

Gah. There are so many ways to game the domain name system, and blah ICANN...

I'm sorry I really don't know anyone who can help you, and I could potentially setup a script to grab the domain through our system, but I'm not sure how my employer would take that if they found it. I'd love to set that up for you, but I don't know what the consequences would be for our backend or my job.

Which domain are you talking about? There is always a chance you could file a complaint with ICANN.

Oh well, it's definitely not worth messing with your job.

It's the .com domain that's on my watermarks. No-one's mentioned complaining to ICANN as a method for getting back the domain, they seem to be fairly useless about the whole thing.

It's your name, so you definitely have a case for filing a complaint. However, in their Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy, it states that you file through a dispute provider, approved by ICANN, and there could be fees involved. I have zero experience with this, but because this all involves legal proceedings, it could well be more expensive than waiting for the domain to expire or outright trying to buy the domain from the current owner.

In case you're interested in ICANN's UDRP: http://icann.org/dndr/udrp/policy.htm

It's horrible legalese. ICANN is completely run by lawyers, or at least it was when that was drafted.

I think someone camped a domain name I had planned based on my Steam community... which means I can't have it for my own when I set up the magazine. It's farding annoying, and these people should be shot. Too many people use domains as a way to screw with other people who just want to get things /done/. Balls to these looters, I say. FEH.
