So how does this work - he just gets fed whenever he wants, i.e. no regular schedule?

sounds like a very familiar routine! ;-) i thought i'd go insane after a while, but the feedings got more spaced out with time, thankfully!

Yup, that is pretty much how it works. Alice is the 24 hour buffet and I am the 24 hour diapering service. If you say no he has no way to know why and just gets upset. Babies who are told no to feeding all the time get more colicy, not less. You can't force arbitrary schedules on a baby, they just can't understand anything other than what they need right now.
