I'm a little late on the bandwagon, but I just had to post something about this: The Open Source Boob Project. Why does this piss me off? Because I'm appalled that this shit is still allowed to go on at cons and there are still people out there who think it's okay. Even moreso, they get their women partners/friends involved and consider it's more ( Read more... )

Thank you for taking the time to explain what exactly this thing is. One of my other friends has been talking about it extensively, as it has her really really upset, but she really didn't explain what it was or why it bothered her. She provided a bunch of links so we could go and check it all out for ourselves, but I have been way too easy to disturb lately so I suspected I'd be doing myself a favor by not following the links.

This kind of garbage is exactly why I'd be afraid to attend a con, even if they had them near me and I had the disposable income to go. Yeesh.

I've always found theferret creepy and assholish whenever anyone linked me to him, so while this was no surprise to me it certainly upped both the creepy and asshole factors by quite a bit. The male privilege oozing from every post he writes about women is just astounding. He's like a straw man constructed by a Women's Studies 101 class. Which might explain his hair.
That said, he fits into a certain type of creepy personality that I've seen inhabit cons like Ad Astra, which for the most part is blissfully absent from the anime cons I've been to. This sort of free-loving Heinleinian douchebag seems to be exclusive to SF-fantasy circles.

It's a funny thing how all this behaviour plays out with people connected to online communities and fandoms. I've seen the same thing with the KoL community. You get a large group of people who communicate primarily via the forums and chat channels. A huge amount of flirtation goes on, and on, and on. All sorts of relationships and roles spring up between individuals and groups as a result, and then suddenly, BAMMO, along comes a convention. I've seen people who feel they need to "live up" to their online behaviour. Some girls and guys carry on the hypersexual discussions and actions that they are known for in chat. Others don't. The trouble is, that sort of shit is just desperate and immature when played out in the flesh. And it leads to all sorts of drama.

It's fun to watch, though.

This guy needs to get over high school... as does a large part of fandom. Which ain't gonna happen soon. It's bad/sad enough that they have to schedule No Means No panels (I mean if it happened once, I'm sure that that 's been done many a time a many a con; I doubt the one I dropped in on wasn't the one & only) at cons.
