How to get your girlfriend to read comics!!

Jan 09, 2010 18:31

So those of you who, for whatever sordid and nerdy reason, read Marvel previews catalogs, might have noticed something. Something with boobs. For those of you who don't read the Marvel previews catalog (and I mean who does that that would be sordid and nerdy) I recreate a page for you below, behind a flist cut of some sort.

Beware!! FEMALES!! )

next stop: gay city!, in retrospect namor would pwn aquaman, i blame nomura, the hammer is my penis, nick fury needs no nipples!!, girls? on my internet?!

The only thing that seems to bug me about this is "Girl Comics". Idk. The rest I can shrug my shoulders at, whether that's the right thing to do or not; I'm used to the way these comic ladies are handled and I can only complain so much before I get tired.

Also I'm a little bit drunk so uHhhhHhh

Why do you have a problem with Girl Comics?

Because it sounds like it's going to be One Tree Hill in comic form or something
as if I need my own genre of comics to have to buy into the company
That may not be the case, but the sound of it rubs me the wrong way

It's a comic anthology by female creators. I'm pretty sure that the first issue is focused on the Punisher, so I really doubt OTH factors into it at all.

this actually seems really neat. i mean, it's sad that they have to go through these efforts in the first place, but recognizing that there is an issue to address and doing it in what seems to be a pretty ok way is cool.

and i would definitely complain less about sexism in comics if i got a free hip-hop brubaker doll action figure. oooh and if it came with a little ghettoblaster too...

Yeah, it's kind of ridiculous how many people get super-defensive whenever you suggest that maybe, just maybe sexism might exist. I like how the "Women in Marvel" ad emphasizes that this is for all readers.

I just want to be bling enough to wear a watch and a bracelet.

I would willing live in a ghetto... of GIRLS!!

When people give me sexist shit offline they're in for a righteous verbal smackdown, because the older I get the harder I find it to contain any feminist rage I might have. I used to let too many things slide to avoid confrontation, but those days are long over. If someone wants to bring on the anecdata they'd better be prepared for a fight.

As for sexism in comics? I'd whine less if the industry would stop indulging in totally groan-worthy things. It's nice to see that women in comics are being celebrated, at least that is a step in the right direction (though I still have reservations).

In conclusion, I liked this entry a great deal. Keep being awesome.

My word-fu doesn't come as natural to me, offline. I get kind of in a stupor of "did you really just say that"? and by the time the idiocy registers lo, the moment for witty talkbacking has passed. But I'm working on that.

Indeed, I should stop complaining if I am so insulted by your comic books--I should simply drop them and pursue more girly pursuits that require less emotional stress like painting my nails or posing in mirrors./sarcasm

Marvel, the 1800's called--they want their metaphor on women's tiny brains back.
But seriously that whole "women can't be leaders" thing sounded like those anti-women's lib ads that said that women couldn't go to college and become smart because numbers and such burn their delicate brains. Like men don't have emotions? HOW DEEP.

Lmao, that statement was not made by Marvel, but by an idiot who likes Marvel and probably didn't realize girls could read his words because literacy hasn't quite trickled down yet.

Indeed. Dumbass. Though a representative at Marvel did write that he wondered why women read comic books if all they were going to do is complain about them.
Clearly, he's never been into Star Wars.

Yeah, I mean, Matt Fraction included Psylocke on a team so he would "have a minority member" and don't even get me started on that.

All male fans do is complain about comics!! This is universal!!
